Kolkata curator lashes out at MS Dhoni ? Cricket News Update
Veteran pitch curator Prabir Mukherjee has slammed Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni for asking a square turner from the opening day of the third Test against England, commencing at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata from Wednesday, December 5.
Mukherjee, the BCCI's chief curator for the East Zone and a regular at Eden Gardens since several years, termed Dhoni?s insistence for a turning track as ?immoral and illogical?, and revealed that he would stay away from the ground for a month.
The veteran Eden Gardens curator, who has to date prepared pitches for 14 Tests at the historic venue, has been in the news in recent days, following his differences with the Indian skipper over the nature of the pitch at the Eden Gardens for the crucial third Test.
Mukherjee turned down MS Dhoni?s request for a spin-friendly Eden Gardens wicket and was subsequently instructed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to stop work on the track.
Following the pitch row, he was advised by the doctor to take a few days rest, after complaining of uneasiness. However, the veteran curator returned to the ground on Saturday evening after having addressed a press conference at his residence earlier in the day.
The curator initially tried to hedge his annoyance, citing health and family issues for his decision to not join the ground?s staff ahead of the Kolkata Test. However, he burst out when pressed further on the issue, saying this job was his passion, not a profession insisting that he did not want to be a party to tampering the pitch at the Eden Gardens.
"Dhoni has asked for a square turner. This is immoral because you (organisers) are selling tickets for a five-day Test. On a square turner, there's every chance of a match ending in three days," explained Mukherjee, who has been at Eden Gardens for around 15 years. "It's immoral and illogical to tamper with the pitch. I've not done it in my life," he insisted.
Mukherjee, a former Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) joint secretary, criticising Dhoni?s demand for a turning track said that players get handsome salaries to showcase their skills in all conditions.
"The players are contracted to the BCCI and get paid handsomely to play good cricket. Their contracts don't stipulate that they would get this (turners)," said the curator in an irked tone.
"Climatic conditions vary from state to state. What you get in Mumbai, you won't get in Kolkata because the conditions and soil content are different," he added.
