GREENVILLE ? The Pirate Nation is reacting to the news that East Carolina University's football team will soon join a bigger conference.
The team is packing up and making a move to the Big East conference. The school is joining Tulane which will become a full member in 2014. ECU will only be a partial member. Both schools currently play in conference USA and some students on campus are excited about the move.
?I think it's for our school just because you know we're playing in a bigger conference than conference USA not to knock on conference USA I'm just saying you know the big east is known to be a more competitive conference and I think that's what our school really needs,? said student Zach Ross.
School representatives also appear to be happy about the move.
?We feel very good about that opportunity to the Big East and we're going to work very hard to make sure that we're a great institutional member and a football member,? said ECU Chancellor Steve Ballard.
The announcement was made on Tuesday, and school representatives said saying this is a step in the direction of incorporating all of the school's 19 teams.
"The question about would we like to be an all-sport member of the Big East, I think that everybody who enters a football-only arrangement is hoping for that sometime in the future but again we know that we need to earn that,? said ECU Athletic Director Terry Holland.
ECU and Tulane with become the fifth and sixth USA school to join the Big East in the last two years. Just last week, Rutgers announced it was joining the Big Ten.
