Mother, Daughter Team Building A Health Food Chain - Business ...

Forbes:

Green Acres is now a medium sized organic and all natural foods store based on Barbara?s conviction that ?food is our best medicine.? Originally the store served as an alternative to weekly grocery shopping at the large supermarket chain right across the street. But overtime Green Acres has become a shopping destination as it expanded its product mix, including specialty foods, meats, a deli and baked goods?to about 10,000 SKUs, always sticking to the store mantra of no refined sugars, pesticides, chemical preservatives, or hydrogenated oils. The vitamin and supplement business, which now includes a house brand, accounts for about one-third of revenues.

Barbara Hoffmann attributes the success of Green Acres to its basic product integrity along with its heavy emphasis on customer education and community outreach. Both Green Acres stores host regular product demos and cooking classes. In addition, the Wichita stores provides live music on weekends, hosts a farmer?s market every Saturday to highlight local produce; it also produces several large events featuring nationally known health experts, for which it has to rent space in nearby hotels to accommodate the hundreds of customers who show up. For an upcoming 18th anniversary celebration Barbara estimates they will have 1000 people come through the store?in a metropolitan community of just over 600,000!

Best Buy CEO Resigns - Small Business Trends

Best Buy was in the news recently as it announced a $1.7 billion quarterly loss, along with layoffs and the closure of 50 of its 1100 stores. ?And then came the news that Best Buy CEO Brian Dunn had resigned upon mutual agreement. ?If you weren?t listening carefully, you might have assumed the usual story: ?poor financial results led to his forced resignation.

Best Buy

In fact, that isn?t the reason (at least not the main reason) he is gone. ?The Board revealed that it was?investigating an alleged inappropriate relationship Dunn had with a 29-year-old female subordinate. ?The Board?s action involves claims that company assets were misused in that relationship ? whatever that means. ? It?s not clear how much money or assets are involved ? whether it was a case of buying her gifts and padding the expense account, or paying her an exhorbitant salary she wouldn?t otherwise have merited, or something else.

Oh, did I forget to say Dunn is married? ?Well he is, although he certainly wouldn?t be the first CEO who has had an affair ? and with a subordinate.

But affairs with subordinates are tricky situations. ?You might be tempted to think that in the 21st century, a relationship is a personal matter. ?However, every relationship between a manager and a subordinate is the company?s business, to a degree.

First, it can open up a company to a claim of sexual?harassment. ?A relationship may well start out consensual (at least consensual in the CEO?s or manager?s eyes), but if the subordinate has second thoughts later or the relationship ends, it may lead to a claim of harassment.

Second, how other employees see things is often very different from the way the parties involved in the relationship see it. ?A?relationship at the CEO level with a subordinate often sets off a ripple effect of?suspicions?of favoritism, poor morale and churn ? especially when a company is under fiscal stress like Best Buy. ?The CEO is a very?visible?person. ?All eyes are on him or her. ?Employees and the Board lose confidence, secretly thinking ?no wonder the company is going down the tubes and layoffs are imminent ? your brain is somewhere else, Mr. CEO, and not on the company.? ? Jealous co-workers or those on the outs with the CEO will be eager to rat out the CEO to the CEO?s boss, the Board.

That?s why publicly-traded companies take such allegations so seriously. ?The whole situation is fraught with issues. ?They may have no choice but to launch a major investigation,?sometimes?using outside law firms ?? even if neither party in the relationship is complaining.

In Best Buy?s case, that relationship has had an impact well beyond two people. ?Now it means more stress on a company already reeling. ?Instead of focusing on fixing its business model, the company will be spending the next six months to a year recruiting a new CEO.

For Dunn, it will impact his and his family?s financial situation. Leaving a publicly traded company at age 51 as opposed to making it to retirement age, could be a loss of ?hundreds of millions of dollars? according to commentator TJ Walker on Forbes. ?And it?s not clear the impact on the subordinate, but I can tell you from past experience as Vice President of HR in the corporate world, at the very least it may put a cloud on her career, even if the company does not take adverse action against her.

So what does all this have to do with small businesses? ?There are a few lessons. ?A small business owner may not have to worry about a Board of Directors swooping in and forcing a resignation. ?But consider the churn that may be going on under the surface. ?It?s incredibly hard to keep a relationship a secret for long in the workplace.

And it?s not just the owner?s relationships I am talking about. ?Any manager who has a relationship with a subordinate can put the company at risk, opening it up to a harassment claim that would be expensive to defend, or might cause the business to go under. ?Most small businesses do not have insurance to cover such claims, or are underinsured, according to Bolt Insurance Agency.

Small business workplaces tend to be filled with people who have relationships. ?It may be a family business. ?And in small businesses it tends to be natural to hire people with whom you have?relationships.

What can you do? Make sure managers know what sexual harassment is so they can avoid leaving themselves and the company open to a claim. ?Keep your eyes open to budding relationships. ?Take steps to take important decisions about the subordinate (such as pay raises) out of the hands of the manager, or when possible transfer the employee to another supervisor ? yet stay?fair?to both parties. ?In a small workplace it may be tough to take such steps, but you need to protect the business.

The Best Buy situation is a reminder that workplace relationships are full of issues that go well beyond the two people?in?a relationship.

Joe. My. God.: Prostate Cancer Breakthrough?

Promising news:
A new treatment for prostate cancer can rid the disease from nine in ten men without debilitating side effects, a study has found, leading to new hope for tens of thousands of men. It is hoped the new treatment, which involves heating only the tumours with a highly focused ultrasound, will mean men can be treated without an overnight stay in hospital and avoiding the distressing side effects associated with current therapies. A study has found that focal HIFU, high-intensity focused ultrasound, provides the 'perfect' outcome of no major side effects and free of cancer 12 months after treatment, in nine out of ten cases. Traditional surgery or radiotherapy can only provide the perfect outcome in half of cases currently.

HIFU to Treat Prostate Cancer without Side Effects | TopNews ...

As per a recent research, it has been revealed that a new treatment has been developed, which will help prostate cancer patients to avoid the side effects, which occur due to other conventional cancer treatments.

The treatment known as high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) was developed at the University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and University College London. Lead researcher Dr. Hashim Ahmed was of the view that the treatment treats tumor quite closely, and such proximity is not possible in any other treatment.

This closeness helps healthy tissues to remain safe, and also helps them from other probable dangers. It is not the first time that such kind of treatment is used, but it is the first time that the HIFU is used to treat early stages of prostate cancer.

Ahmed said that there are many side effects of traditional treatments and some of them being incontinence, impotence and there can be many other side effects like nerve damage. However, nothing of such kind has been found in the new treatment.

?We?re optimistic that men diagnosed with prostate cancer may soon be able to undergo a day case surgical procedure, which can be safely repeated once or twice, to treat their condition with very few side-effects?, said Ahmed.

He further affirmed that their experiment revealed that nine in ten achieved best results and none of the 41men suffered from incontinence. Moreover, it was found that 95% volunteers were free from cancer after the treatment and only one person suffered from impotence and that too after 12 months.

The procedure is not at all time consuming and patient is released after 24 hours of the surgery. Ahmed said that further trials need to be taken out.

'Mad Men' Takes A Turn For The Geeky

AMC series nerds out with 'Lost' references and Ken Cosgrove's sci-fi novel about a robot and a bridge.
By Josh Wigler

All right, AMC, if we didn't get it before, we certainly do now: You dudes are a bunch of nerds.

No one is going to argue that point what with your record-smashing "Walking Dead," or the developing series based on "Dead" creator Robert Kirkman's "Thief of Thieves" comic book. But all those many, many geek references on this week's "Mad Men"? Consider the message received, loud and clear.

What, you missed the '60s-set drama's absurd amount of nerd-out moments last night (April 15)? For good measure, then, we'll walk you through them all.

"Mad Men" season five draws major attention for "fattening up" Betty Draper actress January Jones.

First and foremost, the episode, titled "Signal 30" and directed by series star (and "Iron Man 2" actor) John Slattery, heralded the arrival of science fiction and fantasy novelist Ben Hargrove, the pen name for ad man Kenny Cosgrove (played by actor Aaron Stanton, already a fixture in geek culture for providing his voice and likeness to the lead role in video game "L.A. Noir"). Previously operating in secret, Ken's private passion was outted by Cynthia, Ken's all-too-forgettable wife who is suddenly a whole lot more memorable when you realize that she's played by Larisa Oleynik, formerly the titular shape-shifter on '90s Nickelodeon series "The Secret World of Alex Mack."

Cynthia (or is it Cheryl? Like Don's new wife Megan, we can't really recall) spilled the beans on "The Punishment of X4," an old story of Ken's, during a dinner party held at Pete and Trudy Campbell's home. Her description of the plot: "There's this bridge between these two planets and thousands of humans travel on it every day, and there's this robot who does maintenance on the bridge. One day he removes a bolt, the bridge collapses, and everyone dies."

"There's more to it than that," a nervous Cosgrove tells the hushed room. Don pushes for further details: Why does the robot destroy the bridge? "Because he's a robot," Ken answers, clearly encouraged by Don's interest. "Those people tell him what to do and he doesn't have the power to make any decisions, except he can decide whether that bolt's on or off."

"Or he just hates commuters," Pete quips in response.

Ken's fledgling career as a sci-fi novelist wasn't the only nerdy reference at the Campbell family's eventful dinner: Texas college sniper Charles Whitman was briefly misidentified as Charles Widmore, a clear Easter egg for "Lost" fans. Indeed, "Lost" co-creator Damon Lindelof (who already enjoyed a shoutout to his six-season sci-fi series earlier in the evening on "The Simpsons") took it upon himself to further flesh out Cosgrove's "X4" through a series of fan-fiction tweets. Well worth a read from the man behind the DHARMA Initiative.

Later, at the same dinner, the faucet at Chez Campbell burst for the second time in the same episode, prompting Don to remove his dress shirt and get to work on fixing the sink. The heroic action drew immediate Superman comparisons from the onlooking housewives, which is far from the first time that Jon Hamm has been connected to the Man of Steel.

Superman is a "young man's game," according to "Mad Men" superstar Jon Hamm

Meanwhile, on a subtler note, Pete Campbell took a turn for the super-villainous this week. Aside from being completely shown up by Don's ability to fix a sink in seconds, Pete spent the episode flirting with and fantasizing about a high school senior in his driver's education class, and later having sex with a prostitute, but only after she switched into king-worshipping role-playing mode. He even got into an intense fist fight with fellow Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce partner Lane Pryce; usually the consummate British gentlemen on the AMC series, don't forget that Lane is played by Jared Harris, who also appears as science terrorist David Robert Jones on Fox's cult sci-fi series "Fringe" and recently enjoyed a celebrated turn as legendary villain Professor Moriarty in "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows." Pete clearly hasn't seen the aforementioned show and film, but he nevertheless learned the hard way (and by hard way I mean via serious ass-kicking) that you never, ever get into a knockout brawl with Dumbledore's son.

All of this served as a reminder to me that Pete, whose views on Don oscillated between hero worship and pure spite throughout the episode, has known about Draper's secret identity for several seasons now. With his latest turn toward the dark side, can it really be much longer before he uses that bit of proverbial kryptonite against the artist formerly known as Dick Whitman? Only Matt Weiner knows for sure.

Finally, we return to Ken's side-career as a writer, news of which spread throughout SCDP like wildfire. After a scolding from silver fox playboy Roger Sterling (played by the aforementioned Slattery, whose own Roger got his groove back a bit in this week's episode, albeit to mixed results for his company), Cosgrove was persuaded to let his alter-ego Ben Hargrove go, but not before Peggy Olsen was able to read one of Ken's short sci-fi stories, "the one in Galaxy about the girl who laid eggs." (Lindelof has titled the story "Ova," though whether or not he tweets excerpts from the yarn remains to be seen.)

But where Ben Hargrove dies, Ken is reborn anew as Dave Algonquin, writer of "The Man with the Miniature Orchestra." The episode closes with a reading from Cosgrove's latest effort: "There were phrases of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony that still made Coe cry. He always thought it had to do with the circumstances of the composition itself. He imagined Beethoven deaf and soul-sick, his heart broken, scribbling furiously while Death stood in the doorway, clipping his nails. Still, Coe thought, it might have been living in the country that was making him cry. It was killing him with its silence and loneliness, making everything ordinary too beautiful to bear."

Ken's latest written effort isn't exactly nerd-worthy, no, but it's the perfect example of why it's so fantastic to have "Mad Men" back after a year and a half, geek call-outs be damned.

Kindergartner handcuffed by cops after tantrum

By Miguel Llanos, msnbc.com

The?family of a 6-year-old Georgia girl?is upset at police and school officials after the girl was handcuffed and taken to a police station for allegedly throwing furniture, tearing items off the walls and knocking over a shelf, which injured the principal.

"A 6-year-old in kindergarten?" Earnest Johnson, the father of Salecia Johson, asked with disbelief. "They have no?business calling the police and?handcuffing?my child," he told WMAZ-TV.

Police defended their actions during the incident which occurred last Friday at Creekside Elementary School in Milledgeville, Ga.

"Our policy?states that any detainee transported to our station in a patrol vehicle is to be handcuffed in the back. There is no age discrimination on that rule,"?Milledgeville Police Chief Dray Swicord told WMAZ-TV.

The family on Tuesday demanded that the city change its policy, the Associated Press reported, and claimed the girl was shaken up by being put in a holding cell.

The police officer called to the scene later wrote that he "noticed damage to school property and possible assault of other students and staff. I made six attempts to contact her mother via telephone."

"I attempted to calm Johnson down," he?wrote in his incident report. "Johnson then pulled away and began actively resisting and fighting with me."

The principal, Dianne Popp,?said "a small shelf struck her in the leg while Johnson was throwing items at her," according to the police report, and that the girl "tried several times to get out of the office. Johnson was observed biting the door knob of the office and jumping on the paper shredder and attempted to break a glass frame above the shredder."

Johnson was charged with assault and damage to property, WMAZ-TV reported, but she will not have to go to court because of her age.

Johnson's mother, Constance Ruff, says her daughter was suspended until the start of the next school year.??

"She has mood swings some days, which all of us have mood swings some days," she told WMAZ-TV. "I guess that was just one of her bad days."

Asked by msnbc.com if the suspension means the?girl will be held back a year, a school official had "no comment"?and said the principal would have to respond to that but was not immediately available due to school testing.

Video: Boy takes wheel of school bus after driver passes out

Johnson's aunt, Candace Ruff, said the girl "might have misbehaved,?but I don't think she actually misbehaved to the point?that she should have been handcuffed and taken downtown to the police department."

"Call the police? Is that the first step? Or is there any other kind of intervention that can be taken to help that child," she asked.

Ruff?added that the girl was by herself in a holding cell and complained about the handcuffs when she and her sister went to get her.

"She said they were really tight. She said they really hurt her wrists," Ruff told the Associated Press. "She was so shaken up when we went there to pick her up."

This isn't the first time we've seen schoolchildren handcuffed by police. In Colorado last month, a 6th grader was handcuffed and taken to a juvenile holding facility for disobeying an assistant principal and being "argumentative and extremely rude," according to the police report.

Optoma Pico PK320 Pocket Projector

The Optoma Pico PK320 Pocket Projector ($450 street) is the brightest pico projector we?ve tested, with a good range of connections including HDMI. It stacks up well against other pico projectors in connectivity, and has decent image quality but for one notable issue we encountered in testing. It?s worth a good look if you?re looking for a powerful pocket projector.

The PK320 is rated at 100 lumens, and has a native WVGA (854 by 480 pixel) widescreen resolution. The projector is quite compact, measuring 1.2 by 4.7 by 2.7 inches. Using our postage scale, I weighted the projector at 0.5 pounds, while adding the power adapter brought the total weight up to just under a pound. The projector also can run off an included, removable lithium-ion cell that can last 90+ minutes in eco mode and 50+ minutes in standard mode, according to Optoma. It can fit in my pants pocket easily enough, though it takes up much of the room.

This copper-brown projector has the look of a larger projector, with the lens near the edge of one of the long sides, as opposed to the ?light saber? appearance of many picos in which the beam emerges from the middle of the narrow end. The focus wheel is in front of the lens, and is tricky to use, even if you can avoid putting a finger into the light path. On one side is the tiny power button; in back are the ports, a good selection for a pico projector: a proprietary port to fit a VGA cable; mini-HDMI; micro-USB for file transfer; AV-in, which fits an included cable with 3 RCA plugs for composite video, and an audio-out jack for headphones.

On top of the projector is a 7-button control panel, backlit with blue LEDs (though you have to quickly make a selection as the buttons soon go dark). The projector includes a tiny remote the same 7 buttons, plus buttons for Off, Bright, and for accessing VGA, HGMI, and Video sources. Working the menus can be awkward, especially at first. The controls (both on the remote and on the projector itself) make use of the arrow keys, but more often as symbol keys to access specific functions than to navigate menus. For instance, the Home screen shows six choices, each identified by a symbol: the right arrow denotes Setup, the up arrow, Music, etc.?they?re useless as arrow keys here in that you can?t scroll anywhere, but they do take you to the functions they symbolize. This takes some getting used to.

You can run presentations computer free from the projector?s 2GB of internal memory, or off of a microSD card. In addition to showing video, you can play music, show photos, or display business documents (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or PDF) from internal memory, memory card, or thumb drive.

I tested the PK320 from about 8 feet away from our test screen, where it threw a test image about 48 inches diagonally. Image quality suffered in modest ambient light, so it?s best used in a relatively small, dark room.

Image Quality

In testing using the DisplayMate ?suite, I found the PK320?s data image quality suitable for internal presentations, say to a small workgroup?provided that the room is dark and relatively small. You could use it for presenting to potential clients in a pinch, though you might not want to use it in presentations where sharp text or exacting color is paramount. The good news is that (with the exception of an issue that I?ll soon discuss) colors were bright and reasonably true, especially yellows, which often look dull or mustardy with DLP projectors. The projector also showed less of a rainbow effect? distracting red-green-blue rainbow glints, particularly in bright areas against a dark background?than most DLP projectors.

In our text testing, images showed some blur at the two smallest sizes in both black-on-white and white-on-black text, a bit more fuzzy than is typical of a data projector. The other notable issue involved tinting in images with white or gray backgrounds.

When I set up our test unit and turned it on, I immediately noticed a pink tint in the (rather busy) image?s upper left corner. It persisted even after I?d given the projector enough time to fully warm up. In DisplayMate testing, when viewing an image that should have been uniformly white, the tinting revealed itself more fully as pinkish on the image?s left side, and greenish towards the bottom center.

The issue was notable enough that I requested a second test unit from our Optoma rep. I noticed the same issue in the second projector, though it wasn?t as severe: Only a trace of the pink showed up (in the same location), but the green was still apparent, at nearly the same intensity as with the original test unit. It showed up against white to medium gray backgrounds in data images, and with Word and Excel documents. It?s hard to say how pervasive or severe the problem is among PK320s in general based on two test units, but it?s definitely an issue worth looking out for. Optoma says that it is looking into the issue, with an eye towards correcting any irregularities they encounter.

Video Quality

I tested video quality using multiple video sources over several connections, primarily HDMI. The Optoma ML300 is okay for short clips, provided that color fidelity isn?t critical. For the most part, colors were bright and well saturated, but some tinting was apparent at times. Flesh tones tended to look reddish, and some bright areas took on a greenish tinge. Also, there was some loss of detail in bright areas. One plus is that, as was the case in data images, rainbow artifacts were nearly nonexistent and shouldn?t be an issue except maybe for people particularly sensitive to the effect.

Other Issues

The audio from the PK320?s built-in 2-watt speaker is of modest volume, not bad for a pico projector but you?ll want to be close to the projector whether you?re watching a movie or playing music. Fortunately the unit has an audio-out jack for headphones or powered external speakers.

The LED light source will last an estimated 20,000 hours, so you should never have to replace bulbs. The projector is backed by a 1-year limited warranty.

The market for micro-projectors has changed in the past year, with the influx of small LED-based projectors, palmtop sized or a little larger, in the 200 to 500 lumen range. Though there were always a few palmtop projectors, there?s now more of a continuum in side and brightness between pico projectors and ultra-portable business projectors.

The PK320 is among the largest and most powerful pico projectors, and its price is just slightly lower than the new micro-projectors (which cluster in the $500 to $600 range). The PK320 is smaller and lighter than these models, which weigh between 2 and 3 pounds. One drawback, though, is that it has an external AC adapter?which, unlike the projector, isn?t pocketable?while the LED micro-projectors have internal power supplies. The micro-projectors offer higher resolution, generally WXGA (1,280 by 800), and they?re considerably brighter than picos? though we haven?t been impressed with TI?s latest generation of DLP chips that many of them use, as they tend to introduce apparent scaling artifacts in data images that may result in softer focus.

If you?re considering the Optoma Pico PK320, you may want to look at some of these slightly larger and brighter micro-projectors such as the Optoma ML500 ?($650 street, 3.5 stars), Acer K330 ($600 street, 3.5 stars), and the more entertainment-oriented BenQ Joybee GP2 ($599 direct, 4 stars) as well. As for picos, the Editors? Choice Optoma Pico PK301 offers much of what the PK320 brings to the table at a lower price, though it lacks an HDMI connection and is only rated at 50 lumens. The Favi B1-LED-Pico ($280 street, 3.5 stars) is also a respectable choice, though it lacks a battery and so must remain yoked to a wall wart.

The Optoma Pico PK320 Pocket Projector is a powerhouse as a pico projector, bright and with a wealth of connectivity choices. However, it?s less impressive for its price now that bright micro-projectors are available for a little more money, and it still has a few image quality kinks to work out.

Black Keys Warm Up Dreary Coachella Festival Friday

Swedish House Mafia brings the beats as first day of three-day desert festival suffers uncharacteristically low temperatures and drizzle.

INDIO, California — On a day that had festivalgoers packing ponchos instead of sunblock and the merchandise booths no doubt sold a record number of hoodies, the uncharacteristic weather at Coachella's Friday kickoff was no match for the heat of the Black Keys.

The Akron, Ohio, guitar-and-drums blues-rock duo instantly had the crowd in their hands, opening with the "Howlin' For You" sing-along from their 2010 commercial breakthrough, Brothers.

Announced earlier this week as headliners for Lollapalooza 2012 in August, the Keys also performed Friday night at Coachella in 2011, but this year, they were promoted to top billing.

The pair wailed through the Grammy-winning "Tighten Up" and "Lonely Boy." During "Everlasting Light," a giant disco ball descended as frontman Dan Auerbach unleashed his falsetto. Auerbach asked the crowd to wish a happy birthday to drummer Patrick Carney before ending with "I Got Mine."

Swedish House Mafia closed out the main stage, proving that some EDM has outgrown the Sahara dance tent. The masses were jumping to the beats of Axwell, Steve Angello and Sebastian Ingrosso, who is also playing a solo set in the Sahara on Saturday (April 14). Angello will DJ a solo set in June at Las Vegas' Electric Daisy Carnival.

"I heard there was a rumor going around that the reason it was gray and muggy earlier is because there were two Sheffield [England] bands on," Pulp's Jarvis Cocker quipped, referring to earlier mainstagers the Arctic Monkeys.

In the Gobi tent, Frank Ocean fans swooned over his take on Coldplay's "Strawberry Swing" and other cuts from his debut mixtape, Nostalgia, Ultra. The crowd excitedly welcomed Tyler, the Creator to the stage early in the set to growl his Odd Future "Analog 2" verses.

Influential Swedish hardcore band Refused expressed gratitude for their long-awaited reunion, saying, "The reason we're playing tonight is because Coachella invited us." Their hour-long performance, which inspired lots of head-banging and moshing, included "Coup D'Etat," "Worms of the Senses/Faculties of the Skull," "Tannhauser/Derive" and "New Noise."

Elsewhere, the Black Angels psychedelic blues — which included a sitar — didn't draw nearly the crowd it deserved, Madness had the Outdoor stage skanking away and Rancid's Tim Armstrong backed Jimmy Cliff on guitar.

In response to last year's event selling out — a week after the 2011 lineup was announced — Coachella is experimenting with featuring the same artists for two consecutive three-day weekends: April 13-15 and April 20-22.

Still to come this weekend: Radiohead, Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, Bon Iver, Florence and the Machine, A$AP Rocky and the At the Drive-In reunion.

German court upholds ban on iCloud and MobileMe push emails
It's been well over a month now since Apple suspended push email from its iCloud and MobileMe services, and it doesn't look like it will be switching them back on any time soon. According to the Wall Street Journal, a German regional court has backed the ban, upholding Motorola Mobility's claims of patent infringements. The court agreed that Apple must also pay damages to Motorola, but has yet to agree on an amount. So, for now, users will need to stick to manually fetching updates, and hope a final agreement can be met further down the line.

George Zimmerman charged in Trayvon Martin case: Why now, and what next?

George Zimmerman has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of Trayvon Martin. Florida?s Stand Your Ground law could loom large moving forward.?

Forty-five days after police in Sanford, Fla., released neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman without charges after he shot an unarmed black teenager, a special Florida prosecutor has charged him with second-degree murder.

News that Mr. Zimmerman was in custody in Florida capped an emotional and tense three weeks that raised questions about racial injustice and sparked a fiery national debate about Florida's landmark Stand Your Ground self-defense law, which prosecutors acknowledge they may still have to contend with in the case.

Amid massive public pressure and attention from the White House and the Justice Department, special state prosecutor Angela Corey announced Wednesday that the state was charging Zimmerman, a 28-year-old former altar boy going to school to become a police officer, for his role in Trayvon Martin's death.

Saying her decision had nothing to do with public pressure, Ms. Corey said she believes prosecutors have evidence to prove that Zimmerman did not act in self-defense under the state's Stand Your Ground law. A charge of second-degree murder involves the claim that death was caused by dangerous conduct and an obvious lack of concern for human life. Florida law requires a minimum punishment of 25 years and a maximum of life in prison without parole if convicted.

?We have to have reasonable certainty of conviction any time we file charges,? said Corey. ?If Stand Your Ground is an issue, we'll fight it.?

Sanford police released Zimmerman on the night of the shooting, believing they didn't have probable cause given his self-defense claim and physical evidence ? including blood on nose and back of his head ? that he had defended himself.?

But Corey said the case ?changed course? amid a public outcry over the Sanford Police Department's assertion that there would be no arrest, and as Gov. Rick Scott appointed her three weeks ago to lead the investigation.

?The Supreme Court has defined our role as not only ministers of justice, but seekers of truth, and we stay true to that mission,? said Corey, who said she had prayed with the Martin family at their first meeting three weeks ago, though she had not promised them that any charges would be filed.

Given the tension over the case in Sanford, officials in Seminole County ? where the special prosecutor is based ?remained on high alert ahead of Wednesday's announcement. On Monday, an empty police cruiser was riddled with bullets near where Trayvon was shot. Corey said Zimmerman was being held in an undisclosed location for his safety and the safety of others.

?I trust in the goodness of all Florida citizens to allow justice system to reach appropriately conclusion in this case,? Governor Scott said.

According to Martin's family, the arrest is the first step toward closure. They have urged police to arrest Zimmerman, alleging that the outcome would have been different had a black man shot a white man. Thousands of people have marched, many of them wearing a similar hoodie to what Trayvon was wearing the night he died. More than a million people signed a petition for police to arrest Zimmerman on the Change.org website.

?We simply wanted arrest, nothing more, nothing less, and we got it, and I say thank you, thank you Lord, thank you, Jesus,? Trayvon's mother, Sybrina Fulton, said. ?Secondly, I just want to speak from my heart to your heart, because a heart has no color. It's not black, it's not white, it's red. Thank you from my heart to your heart. ?

Ashley Judd strikes back at 'gloating' critics

By Randee Dawn

It was prescription steroids. Ashley Judd says there was no other reason for her apparently puffy face -- not plastic surgery (botched or otherwise) or diet issues, but a medication reaction. But as she told?TODAY's Natalie Morales Thursday, there there was also no excuse for the way she was pounced on for her appearance.

"I don't think that being a public figure makes it legitimate to criticize people the way they are currently criticized in this cultural climate," said the actress, who turns 44 next week.

She said she was offended by the "nasty," "vitriolic" and "gloating tone" the comments took.

But there's a bigger picture here, one she discussed at length in an essay in The Daily Beast. Namely that the objectification and scrutiny of both men and women has gotten out of control. "We're taught not to admit how much it hurts," she said. "Just go buy more hairspray, get back to the gym or buy another butt-clencher exercise DVD, that's how to undo the hurt. When in fact that's just contributing to the pain."

"My puffy face moment is another person's big butt moment," she said. "What happened to me is very common.... We all go through it."

Teen cancer survivor prepares for fourth Poway 'Relay' - Pomerado ...

By Pat Kumpan

Cancer survivor Alexis Johnson is gearing up for the April 21-22 Relay for Life at Lake Poway.

Cancer survivors Alexis Johnson, left, and Peggy Osterhout are preparing for the Relay for Life April 21-22 in Poway.

She is heading the call to arms, encouraging other survivors to offer hope to those fighting the dreaded disease.

?We need more survivors to sign up,? Johnson said. ?That?s what this relay is all about.?

Johnson knows that during her own plight with osteosarcoma, a bone cancer that typically afflicts boys, she was inspired by those who fought and won their fight with cancer.

This marks the fourth year that Johnson, a 19-year-old Poway High School alumna, has participated by forming a team, ?Cure for Kids? and serving on a relay committee, but her first year as survivor chairwoman.

She continues to gain support and pledges for her team from several local families with children and teens afflicted with cancer. While some kids have lost the battle, other kids, and adults, will carry on this year to raise money for the American Cancer Society in its pursuit to find a cure, Johnson said.

This month?s relay begins at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 21 at the lake?s recreation area, 14644 Lake Poway Road and finishes at 9 a.m. the next day. Survivors will walk a victory lap at 9:30 a.m., while others will take laps throughout the day to fulfill their pledge commitment. Several participants will camp out that night and light luminarias to honor loved ones who either continue to fight cancer, or have lost their battle.

According to Johnson and her mentor, Peggy Osterhout, another cancer survivor, seeing the lit candles inside the tiny brown bags is the ultimate emotional experience. Guests often drop by to witness the view, the duo said.

Osterhout, who has had five family members die from cancer, said a bagpiper plays during the ceremony adding to the sentimental moment.

The Poway resident continues to head her own team, ?Memories,? one of several local teams, which can be accessed by going online to www.relayforlife.org/poway.ca.

Family games and other activities are scheduled throughout the event and those who want to donate $10 for a luminaria can call 858-231-1597. All proceeds from the luminarias and pledges benefit the American Cancer Society for research and patient services.

Johnson was diagnosed in 2008 with osteosarcoma, or bone cancer, which typically afflicts boys. After several cancer treatments and surgeries, which left her with nerve damage to her leg, she ultimately decided to have her leg amputated, opting for more functionality with a prosthesis.

?People are unsure of it and little kids are curious (about it),? Johnson said. ?But I?m getting used to it.?

As a cancer survivor, she has learned to eat healthier, has a new daily exercise routine and is adjusting to life ? a ?new normal? ? with a prosthesis.

?Eventually, I?ll be able to run,? she added. ?My parents and family said it was all up to me when I decide to have the amputation.

Osterhout said Johnson is an inspiration to her.

?Alexis came to one of the relays in a wheelchair right after being hospitalized,? Osterhout said.

Johnson kept a poem by Osterhout pinned to her hospital wall during the surgeries, called ?Here I Am,? about ?living life, loving life? as a cancer survivor, words of hope, Johnson said.

Despite their age difference, being cancer survivors makes them sisters in spirit, they said. Who else can understand what being a cancer survivor means?

How Small Business Can Benefit from Time Tracking

As a small business owner, it can be hard to justify going through the motions and controls of the larger corporations. Your time is already limited and enterprise software can be quite expensive. So when I say that you really should be comprehensively tracking employee time, you might be skeptical. Let me tell you why you shouldn?t be.

Time Tracking

Timesheet software is not just for payroll. Increasingly, operational process accounting and project accounting (often for client billing) is becoming important to professional organizations of all sizes. As a growing small business, it?s time to start thinking past paper-based or homegrown timesheet systems, Microsoft Excel spreadsheets, or multiple installed time collection systems that produce inconsistent data. Without timesheet software, it is very difficult to understand project costs.

How can you be sure you?ll get a system that works for your company and is immune to common problems experienced when buying a timesheet collection automation system? Here are a few things to consider:

Have a Buying Process

Too often?in large and small companies alike?the key statement in the buying process is ?Look at this cool thing I found on the Internet.?

The result of this is usually wasted time and money. Timesheet software will touch everyone in your company. Nobody likes to track their time, so it must be simple to use, have a friendly interface and encourage accurate data collection in every way possible. The system should serve as a real accounting system with double entry methodologies and approval processes, and have automatic reminders for the procrastinating, busy, forgetful executive (you know who you are).

First, you need a requirements list. This will enable you to eliminate scads of vendors that pop up when you Google ?timesheet.? To assemble your requirements list, ask all the different departments in the company that will be affected by the system for their input.

Here are a few potential requirements:

  • Do you need to verify invoices sent to you by contractors, and test the timesheet system on them first?
  • Do you need a system that prevents people from tracking time against projects they shouldn?t have access to?
  • Do you need to send payroll data to ADP or Paychex?
  • Do you need to send billing data or payroll data to QuickBooks (or Dynamics or SAP or Oracle)?
  • Do you need to get the system rolled out now with no time to wait for IT to buy a machine and transfer it to your IT shop when they?re ready?
  • Do you need to split-bill back project costs to other internal departments?
  • Do you need to fix your estimation process?
  • Do you need Defense Contract Audit Agency (DCAA) compliance or very accurate IT capitalization data for the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX)?
  • Do you need to understand your R&D costs on a per-product basis?
  • Do you need a tightly-controlled but distributed purchasing process where everyone gets a company credit card?
  • Do you need to reimburse for mileage?
  • Do you need a low monthly fee rather than a giant one time fee?

There is No Magic Fix

I recently saw a statement on one vendor?s site that they can ?implement in 2-3 days.?

Not going to happen. You can?t roll out your time tracking system in two days unless your problem is simple enough to only include one of the above requirements. And if you think your requirements are that simple, you?re probably wrong. But if they really are that simple, don?t spend your money on software; stick with Microsoft Excel.

The technology is powerful and it can help your company become more profitable in a number of ways. It can lower your payroll processing cost while increasing accuracy. It can also speed up your billing and convert more A/R to cash; automate travel expense reimbursement; and most importantly, it can tell you which projects are broken before you would ever have known it before.

Vendors that claim two-day rollout times are just plain lying. Don?t let them fool you.

This is not a complex process but is one that requires time and energy to accomplish it correctly. In part two of this series, we?ll cover questions to ask to make sure the demo is rock-solid, and the advantages of software-as-a-service versus installed software.

Chips as mini Internets: Data-routing techniques that undergird Internet could increase efficiency of multicore chips

ScienceDaily (Apr. 10, 2012) ? Computer chips have stopped getting faster. In order to keep increasing chips' computational power at the rate to which we've grown accustomed, chipmakers are instead giving them additional "cores," or processing units.

Today, a typical chip might have six or eight cores, all communicating with each other over a single bundle of wires, called a bus. With a bus, however, only one pair of cores can talk at a time, which would be a serious limitation in chips with hundreds or even thousands of cores, which many electrical engineers envision as the future of computing.

Li-Shiuan Peh, an associate professor of electrical engineering and computer science at MIT, wants cores to communicate the same way computers hooked to the Internet do: by bundling the information they transmit into "packets." Each core would have its own router, which could send a packet down any of several paths, depending on the condition of the network as a whole.

At the Design Automation Conference in June, Peh and her colleagues will present a paper she describes as "summarizing 10 years of research" on such "networks on chip." Not only do the researchers establish theoretical limits on the efficiency of packet-switched on-chip communication networks, but they also present measurements performed on a test chip in which they came very close to reaching several of those limits.

Last stop for buses

In principle, multicore chips are faster than single-core chips because they can split up computational tasks and run them on several cores at once. Cores working on the same task will occasionally need to share data, but until recently, the core count on commercial chips has been low enough that a single bus has been able to handle the extra communication load. That's already changing, however: "Buses have hit a limit," Peh says. "They typically scale to about eight cores." The 10-core chips found in high-end servers frequently add a second bus, but that approach won't work for chips with hundreds of cores.

For one thing, Peh says, "buses take up a lot of power, because they are trying to drive long wires to eight or 10 cores at the same time." In the type of network Peh is proposing, on the other hand, each core communicates only with the four cores nearest it. "Here, you're driving short segments of wires, so that allows you to go lower in voltage," she explains.

In an on-chip network, however, a packet of data traveling from one core to another has to stop at every router in between. Moreover, if two packets arrive at a router at the same time, one of them has to be stored in memory while the router handles the other. Many engineers, Peh says, worry that these added requirements will introduce enough delays and computational complexity to offset the advantages of packet switching. "The biggest problem, I think, is that in industry right now, people don't know how to build these networks, because it has been buses for decades," Peh says.

Forward thinking

Peh and her colleagues have developed two techniques to address these concerns. One is something they call "virtual bypassing." In the Internet, when a packet arrives at a router, the router inspects its addressing information before deciding which path to send it down. With virtual bypassing, however, each router sends an advance signal to the next, so that it can preset its switch, speeding the packet on with no additional computation. In her group's test chips, Peh says, virtual bypassing allowed a very close approach to the maximum data-transmission rates predicted by theoretical analysis.

The other technique is something called low-swing signaling. Digital data consists of ones and zeroes, which are transmitted over communications channels as high and low voltages. Sunghyun Park, a PhD student advised by both Peh and Anantha Chandrakasan, the Joseph F. and Nancy P. Keithley Professor of Electrical Engineering, developed a circuit that reduces the swing between the high and low voltages from one volt to 300 millivolts. With its combination of virtual bypassing and low-swing signaling, the researchers' test chip consumed 38 percent less energy than previous packet-switched test chips. The researchers have more work to do, Peh says, before their test chip's power consumption gets as close to the theoretical limit as its data transmission rate does. But, she adds, "if we compare it against a bus, we get orders-of-magnitude savings."

Luca Carloni, an associate professor of computer science at Columbia University who also researches networks on chip, says "the jury is always still out" on the future of chip design, but that "the advantages of packet-switched networks on chip seem compelling." He emphasizes that those advantages include not only the operational efficiency of the chips themselves, but also "a level of regularity and productivity at design time that is very important." And within the field, he adds, "the contributions of Li-Shiuan are foundational."

Three Tricks Of Good House Flipping And Mortgage Refinancing

by Judy Slamerson on April 10, 2012

If you know the term house flipping, you should also know that mortgage refinance is a common tool that most house flippers use to make things work without necessarily losing so much money in the process. Here are some recommendations you can use if you?re looking for a way to start your house flipping business right.

1. Choose the Homes Well

Low priced homes should be the priority if you want to try your hand at home flipping. A house is priced in a certain way because of several reasons, and you should be able to tell what these reasons are just by looking at the house. The easiest way to find out which homes to buy is to choose the locality first, then look for homes that are priced below the current rate for that city. A good choice for a location is based on its potential to improve, which would mean the increase in value of the properties inside it.

Your plans for mortgage refinancing in the future may depend highly on the current rate of your investment. A good weather is always a sign that the place is fit for many families. Extreme weather means more expenses flowing out because of future renovations and upkeep. Suburbs in cities with moderate weather will always have great living conditions, and so many homeowners want to own homes in such places.

2. Plan Your Renovation Budget

Make allowances for big renovation projects like roofing, plumbing and wiring. Homes for sale at a low price usually come with bad carpets, leaky roofs and broken floor tiles. You can negotiate a lower price if you notice these things. You must have good budgeting skills to make sure you cover renovation costs. Find the construction firms that charge the lowest. An expensive renovation plan is supposed to be reserved for your real home.

Your mortgage refinancing scheme depends greatly on your estimate for a renovation project. Increasing the value of a home is not hard, especially when you know the tricks. You will be losing too much profit if you put too much money on renovation.

3. Choose Mortgage Refinancing Options Well

Refinancing is a term used for a process of paying off an existing mortgage loan using another one. Beginners in the real estate game usually have to resort to this if they cannot sell as soon as possible. Most of the time, business is done with bank money and not personal assets. You can expect the refinancing option to become more expensive than the original mortgage loan, and this is just a part of what makes the process challenging.

In conclusion, you will need some fundamental house flipping tips if you want to succeed in this real estate arena.

UNITED STATES -- Back in January, more than 1,700 National Guard soldiers left home for training in Camp Shelby, Mississippi. Now, those men and women are starting to deploy overseas.

A total of 650 members of the 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team departed for Kuwait and Afghanistan over Easter weekend. The troops in Kuwait will be responsible for providing security and administrative support to U.S. military facilities in Kuwait.

The 250 soldiers going to Afghanistan will help close down American military facilities in that country. Those troops are based out of Syracuse's Hancock Field.

Both deployments are expected to last nine months.

Russia drops charges in lawyer's prison death

MOSCOW (AP) ? Russia's top investigative body said Monday it has dropped charges against a doctor suspected of negligence in the case of a prominent lawyer who reported official corruption in Russia, then died in custody while suffering from untreated pancreatitis.

The lawyer, Sergei Magnitsky, had accused Interior Ministry officials of using false tax documents to steal $230 million from the state. He was imprisoned for tax evasion in 2008 and died in custody in November 2009.

A private investigation concluded Magnitsky was severely beaten and denied medical treatment in prison, and it accused the government of failing to prosecute those responsible.

Magnitsky worked for Hermitage Capital, an investment fund owned and run by U.S.-born William Browder, who has since been barred from Russia as a security risk.

On Monday, Russia's Investigative Committee dropped the negligence charge against Dr. Larisa Litvinova, citing a two-year statute of limitations in such probes.

Hermitage Capital sharply criticized the decision, calling it "the latest example of the reluctance within the Russian government to hold anyone accountable" for Magnitsky's death.

"In dropping charges against Ms. Litvinova, the Russian investigators have refused to acknowledge that Sergei Magnitsky had been tortured in custody, a crime that has a 10-year statute of limitations," the investment fund said in a statement.

The lawyer's death was seen as a litmus case for Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's pledge to cement rule of law in Russia. Investors working in Russia have said Magnitsky's death and allegations of torture highlight corruption and the arbitrary nature of Russia's justice system.

Shortly after Magnitsky's death, Medvedev pledged to personally oversee the investigation which has been on for more than two years and is due to be wrapped up later this month.

But the Investigative Committee said Monday it has closed the investigation of Litvinova, the chief physician at the Butyrskaya prison where Magnitsky died, because of the statue of limitations. She was charged with negligence that led to Magnitsky's death, while the prison's deputy chief, Dmitry Kratov, was charged with negligence. The charge was not dropped against Kratov on Monday.

Magnitsky's family and colleagues have accused authorities of delaying the probe and charging only perpetrators, rather than those who might have ordered the lawyer's persecution.

In an apparent response to these claims, the Investigative Committee said Monday that the probe has taken so long because of lengthy medical procedures and the fact that Litvinova and Kratov were both hospitalized for two months last year for unexplained reasons.

The statue of limitations for the charge that Litvinova faced was shortened by Medvedev's amendments to the Criminal Code aimed at reducing the number of crimes that entail criminal liability. Medvedev proposed these amendments in response to criticism of the treatment of jailed businessmen, which was largely inspired by Magnitsky's case.

Investigators have recently reopened a tax evasion probe against Magnitsky, even though he is dead, saying that it would give his relatives a chance to clear his name. But his family has objected to that, saying it never requested such an opportunity.

In a ruling posted on its website Monday evening, Russia's highest court declined to review a petition by Magnitsky's mother questioning the legality of the posthumous tax evasion probe because she is not party to it. The Constitutional Court also confirmed the legality of the new investigation.
