FREE IS MY LIFE: MOVIE REVIEW: The Perks of Being a Wallflower

This movie review for "The Perks of being a Wallflower" was written by guest blogger Liz Parker...

The Perks of Being a Wallflower may just be one of the best films you see all year, which isn't a surprise considering the author of the novel on which it's based wrote the screenplay and also directed the movie. Having an author adapt his/her novel into a screenplay is common, but to have that author also direct the film is highly unusual, and Stephen Chbosky only had one directing credit to his name (from 1995) before this film. With a talented cast including Emma Watson (sporting an American accent!), Logan Lerman, and Ezra Miller, this movie is one that you can't miss.

The scene is early 1990s Philadelphia, and Logan Lerman plays Charlie, an incoming freshman in high school who has lately been having a tough time. It's alluded that he used to hear voices and "see things," and things got worse after a tragic event involving his best friend in 8th grade. As a 9th grader, he has no friends, even though his sister, Candace (Nina Dobrev), attends the same school as him; she's too busy hanging out with her boyfriend, Ponytail Derek (Nicholas Braun), to introduce Charlie to people. Charlie soon becomes friends with Patrick (Ezra Miller), though, a senior retaking his freshman shop class, and he introduces Charlie to fellow seniors Sam (Emma Watson), Mary Elizabeth (Mae Whitman), and others who aren't afraid to "be different."

Charlie has a major crush on Sam, who ends up being his first kiss; after going to the Sadie Hawkins dance with Mary Elizabeth, however, he finds himself suddenly dating her, which he's not really happy about. Sam is dating an older college guy, meanwhile, and Charlie is afraid to tell her about his feelings. Patrick is secretly dating the school quarterback, because the quarterback has a girlfriend and doesn't want to come out of the closet to his friends. Charlie must navigate through freshman year of high school, but soon finds that life is much happier when you have friends to share it with.

Most people know Logan Lerman from the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, and I thought he did extraordinarily well here; so did Watson, as his friend Sam, and Miller, as the gay artistic friend. Paul Rudd has a small role as Charlie's English teacher, whom Charlie forms a bond with since he loves to read, and Dylan McDermott and Kate Walsh play Charlie's mostly-normal parents. Melanie Lynskey also appears in flashbacks, as Charlie's deceased aunt with whom he shared a secret. I was also pleasantly surprised at Watson's American accent; if you had never seen her in the Harry Potter series, you would have definitely believed she was American, and as the movie went on I began to forget that she used to be Hermione in those films.

Yes, definitely see this movie. I'm guessing fans of the book will love this film as well, though I should reread the novel at some point to compare the two. Everything that happens in the movie could have happened in a real high school, and the last 10 or 15 minutes puts an interesting spin on the film's plot as a whole. I actually wouldn't even mind a sequel to Wallflower, though that won't happen, as I found myself thinking about Charlie long after the movie ended and wondering how he would fare in his sophomore year and beyond. Most people hated high school, yet this film makes you want to relive those days - the friends, the experiences, the ups and downs, and, as Charlie says, the feeling of "being infinite."

The Perks of Being a Wallflower is in theaters now and is rated PG-13 with a runtime of 103 minutes. 4.5 stars out of 5.

(AP) ? In nearly six decades of running a dairy in central California, Mary Cameron made a name for herself in a male-dominated industry: She led several dairy organizations and was honored as Outstanding Dairy Producer of the Year.

But the 82-year-old Cameron ? who still drives a tractor and supervises her Hanford dairy ? is on the brink of losing her life's work. She can no longer pay the bills. Her bank has classified her loan as distressed. And she can't afford enough feed for her 900 milking cows and 1,000 heifers.

"I have been in this business for 57 years and I have never been in financial trouble like I am right now," said Cameron, who runs the Atsma-Cameron Dairy with her two sons. "I'm on the verge of bankruptcy. It's horrible and inexcusable."

Cameron is not alone. Across California, the nation's largest dairy state, dozens of dairy operators large and small have filed for bankruptcy in recent months and many teeter on the edge of insolvency. Others have sold their herds or sent them to slaughter and given up on the business.

Experts say California dairymen face a double whammy: exorbitant feed costs and lower milk prices. The Midwest drought has led to corn and soybean costs increasing by more than 50 percent this summer, stressing dairymen from Wisconsin and Minnesota to Missouri. But in California, milk prices have also lagged behind those in the rest of the nation, exacerbating the crisis.

And while milk revenues in California have soared to over $7.5 billion in 2011, making milk the top agricultural commodity, higher revenues mean little, famers say, because it costs so much more to produce the milk.

"I don't think there's a milk producer in the state who is profitable right now," said Michael Marsh, CEO of Western United Dairymen.

Since 2008, California has lost nearly 300 dairies, with 1,668 remaining as of January, according to the California Department of Food and Agriculture. There are no official estimates on how many dairies have shuttered in 2012 ? but interviews with dairymen and experts indicate several hundred dairies could be in danger of going under.

"It's been like a floodgate," said Riley Walter, a Fresno-based agricultural bankruptcy lawyer who has worked on 58 cases of dairies in financial trouble this past year ? from bankruptcies, to liquidations, to operations taken over by receivers.

"Recently, I had two men over 60 years old who broke down and sobbed in court," Walter said. "You would be surprised how much these men care about their cows."

At the Overland Stock Yard in Hanford, owner Peter Belezzuoli said he sees two to three dairymen selling their entire herd every month, compared to about four per year before the crisis. More cows are being sold for slaughter, he said. And the value of dairy cattle has plummeted by as much as 50 percent in the past five years.

"It's no different than the housing industry, where people lost all the equity," he said. "People have the same cow, but now it doesn't have the same value."

Economists say milk and feed prices always fluctuate ? but it's the margin between the two that counts, and how far apart the thin years are.

Only three years ago, falling milk prices forced many dairymen to go under. The current crisis, dairymen say, came too quickly. Many still have unpaid loans, have exhausted their equity, and can't get new loans.

For Cameron, who grew up washing barns and feeding cows, costs of production vastly surpass revenues. She's losing $40,000 every month, she said.

Her parents emigrated from Holland in the 1920's and started a dairy in California's Central Valley. After college, Cameron followed in their footsteps: Her office wall is filled with awards and news articles touting her successful dairy career.

Today, Cameron owes $7.5 million to her banks and creditors, and has run out of cash for feed. To make ends meet, she has sold cows for beef and fed her herd less grain ? but that means milk production is down and so is revenue.

Cameron recently saw a bankruptcy lawyer and may have to sell her entire herd and dairy.

"It just makes me sad," Cameron said. "This is a world I love, this is my life."

For her woes, Cameron blames state officials' decision to keep milk prices lower than those in other states.

California has had its own milk pricing system for dairy since the 1930's, separate from that operated by the federal government in other states. The California Department of Food and Agriculture sets minimum prices that must be paid to farmers in the state for five classes of milk.

In recent years, California's prices tended to be lower than in other states. In 2011 and 2012, California's price for milk used to make cheese was frequently $2 or more lower per hundredweight of milk than in the rest of the nation.

CDFA spokesman Steve Lyle said the reason for lower prices is that milk supply exceeds demand in California.

The glut forces California producers to sell much of their milk to makers of products such as cheese, which pays much less than selling milk for drinking. And since much of the milk is sold out of state, the price farmers receive is lower to reflect higher transportation costs.

Several dairy organizations filed suit in August, alleging that CDFA failed to follow the law when it refused to increase the minimum price of milk sold for cheese to bring it in line with prices around the country.

Economists say the market itself will lift prices: as more dairymen go out of business, fewer cows will produce less milk, which in turn will lead prices to go up.

For Cameron, higher prices would mean she could keep her dairy. When she dies, she wants her children to scatter her ashes in the corrals.

"That's where I belong," she said, "...that's where I've been all my life."

Louie, Season 3

Louis C.K. in the season finale of Louie. Louis C.K. in the season finale of Louie

Courtesy FX.

I started off this TV Club hoping that Season 3 of Louie would be ?as loose and weird and ambitious and tonally uneven and emotionally dead-on as ever.? Thirteen shows later, knowing now that Louis C.K. and some version of his crew flew all the way to China for what amounted to, at best, one-fourth of one episode of half-hour television, the ?as ever? part seems absurdly quaint. Perplexing, heartbreaking, hilarious, bizarre, a little lost, a little sexist?this season was, in the immortal words of Superchunk, ?everything at once.?

Last night?s finale was all that, including, despite both David and Jonah?s beautiful assessments, a little disappointing. The opener, with Louie slouched and forlorn on his couch as the camera pulls back to reveal Lilly and Jane tearing open their Christmas presents with delight, and then flashing back to reveal the hell that Louie went through to create that delight, was pretty much perfect. Jonah said it better than I ever could: Sweating, and ultimately sobbing, over a fucker of a doll in order to make your kid happy/shield her from unhappiness, is not going above and beyond?it?s being a parent. (Please direct all complaints about over-parenting philosophies to the comments, thank you.)

The elevator family tableaux hit me much harder than Liz?s death (which I thought C.K. kinda screwed up by cutting so obviously to the hospital?s New Year?s Eve cheer). Being alone is one thing?being left alone, as your family shoots down an elevator shaft and off on a two-week vacation with Patrick, seems much worse. To know what having a family is, and then to not have it all the time, and then to watch some other guy have it?this is the kind of stuff I have nightmares about.

Whether Louie was searching for a mate, a friend, or his runaway (well, closeted) daughter, most of this season was, in some form, about Louie not wanting to be alone. He may have stolen a boat in order to not reunite with his father, but all that did was leave him more adrift. Even the three-episode ?Late Night? arc feels, in hindsight, like an attempt to let Louie finally commit, and hopefully marry, his career. The finale addressed Louie?s fear?and reality?of loneliness head-on, with those awesomely named local news anchors taunting Louie from behind the TV screen.

Jonah, I wish I saw in that final scene what you saw?camaraderie, community, Louie feeling not so alone. You must have turned off the episode smiling. Instead, I saw a stupid American pronouncing Chinese funny, trying to make his hosts laugh on command, as if performing for Jack Dall. And I saw C.K. (lovingly) condescend to another culture, as he did in the Ramon episode: If colorful Latinos really know how to live, Chinese villagers understand the meaning of life.

But, hey, no hard feelings. I don?t know what in this episode, or season for that matter was real, what was a dream, and what was whatever the third choice would be?and it really doesn?t much matter. Like Louie arriving at the mighty Yangtze only to find a tiny stream but a tiny stream surrounded by gorgeous landscape but gorgeous landscape in the middle of one of the most populated cities in the world and that city being utterly foreign and yet kind of familiar and way better than being in Mexico with your brother-in-law, I?ll suck up the disorientation, embrace the emotion, and rationalize the let-downs of whatever the hell all that was.

Sport Information Resource Centre (SIRC): Does exercise help ...

Osteoarthritis or "common arthritis" is the gradual wearing down of the joint's hyaline cartilage.? Our joint's have a shiny, smooth surface at the end of each bone which allows friction and free motion.? When this area becomes damaged, thinned or worn away it is known as osteoarthritis.? The rubbing of the damaged area is painful and the repetition leads to inflammation, swelling and more pain.

Three kinds of exercises you can do if you have osteoarthritis:

Exercise is considered the most effective non-drug treatment for reducing pain and improving movement for people with osteoarthritis.? Keep in mind that exercise should be balanced with rest and joint care. If your joints hurt or you have redness or swelling, rest your joints and then try again.? Other treatments include physiotherapy, podiatry, anti-inflammatories and supplements such as Glucosamine and Chondroitin.? These supplements are not heavily researched, however they are still widely prescribed to help people with osteoarthritis.

You may not be able to perform like you did when your were in your twenties, but the smart person who continues to exercise is one who adapts their training and works with their body, not against it.? As always, before starting any training regimen, speak to your doctor first and then decide which exercises may be best for you.? Many people have made changes to their lifestyle after being diagnosed with osteoarthritis and continue to enjoy daily exercise.

UNC students compete in promoting social innovation, businesses ...

N.C. State A&T University Aggies McNair Hall campus generic

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) ? Dozens of North Carolina college students are competing to see who wants to build a better world with profits generated by socially sensitive companies.

The competition involving the 17 University of North Carolina schools is scheduled for Thursday at North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro.

Competing teams are presenting business plans that address social issues in their communities. Teams submitted proposals ranging from using video games to retrain the unemployed to developing local food markets in poor communities.

Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus is the headline speaker for the Greensboro competition. He headlines similar competitions in Washington, D.C., and Portland, Ore.

Yunus pioneered the concept that smart lending to the very poor who want to start small businesses can break the cycle of poverty in their communities.

Another 400 West Nile cases reported in U.S. in past week: CDC

(Reuters) - More than 400 new U.S. cases of West Nile virus emerged in the last week, in an outbreak that remains the second worst on record but has begun to show signs of slowing.

So far this year, 3,545 cases have been reported to federal health officials as of September 25, up from 3,142 reported the week before, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said in its weekly update of outbreak data.

That marked a rise of nearly 13 percent, down considerably from a 30 percent weekly jump witnessed earlier this month.

About 38 percent of all cases have been reported in Texas. Other states with large number of cases include Mississippi, Michigan, South Dakota, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and California.

A total of 147 people have died from the disease, compared with 134 reported one week ago. Just over half of the cases reported to the CDC this year have been of the severe neuroinvasive form of the disease, which can lead to meningitis and encephalitis.

The milder form of the disease causes flu-like symptoms and is rarely lethal.

Experts believe the disease originated in Africa and was first detected in New York City in 1999. Outbreaks tend to be unpredictable. Hot temperatures, rainfall amounts and ecological factors such as bird and mosquito populations have to align just right to trigger an outbreak such as the one this year.

The CDC said the number of cases this year is the highest reported to federal health officials through the last week in September since 2003, the year with the most cases.

Agriculture back in focus as growth estimate gets downgraded ...

Source: The Economic Times, Sept 26, 2012

When the country was growing at more than 8 per cent for about a decade, services and manufacturing were the darlings of policy-makers, investors and talking heads. Agriculture, a segment that employs nearly half the hundred crore population of the country, was hardly mentioned even in passing. This year, thanks to a poor monsoon, suddenly the farmers are the centre of India?s growth story, or the lack of it.

Never in the past decade has agriculture seriously rattled economists and investors. Since it contributed less than one-fifths to the gross domestic product, agriculture was considered to be insignificant in the overall scheme of things.

From Morgan Stanley to Citigroup to Standard Chartered and the Reserve Bank of India, nearly every other bank has downgraded India?s growth estimate citing a possible poor farm output which is compounded by the global uncertainty owing to the sovereign crisis. It is a reflection of the hard reality that agriculture, notwithstanding its low contribution to the GDP, will remain significant enough for the overall growth just because of the sheer population that it supports. Indeed, the so-called India story was supported not only by the urban population but also by rural India.

Early last month, American investment bank Morgan Stanley had warned in a research that inadequate rainfall would affect India?s growth by 30-40 basis points (bps) because of the impact of weak monsoons on agri-GDP. Later, several other research firms, banks and brokerages, too, lowered their growth forecasts because of concerns over the outlook for agriculture. This September monsoon arrived with a bang. The water levels in the reservoirs went up enough to take care of the needs of the season. In a small way, this improved the prospects for agriculture. However, with the Kharif crop ? which accounts for almost half the share in the country?s farm output ? not expected to keep in line with the trend growth, even improved rains in September are unlikely to revise the farm sector outlook.

All these developments then raise a question. Why is the market taking this sector so seriously? One of the arguments put forward is that, in the past, whenever agri-GDP failed, it was offset by a better export growth or higher pick-up in services growth. But, this time round, both exports and services, too, have failed to look up. And, hence, the impact of agriculture on the overall economic output is even more conspicuous.

?In the past, whenever agriculture has failed, the impact on the overall GDP used to get neutralised by higher exports, rising investments or fiscal action. But, this time, none of these factors are present,? said Abheek Barua, chief economist, HDFC Bank.

Looking at the sector from a longer-term perspective, in the post-reforms period, agriculture has not got any policy attention that it deserved even though the government has always made a noise about its policy goals for inclusive growth. Even the big-bang reforms that the government announced last week has no policy measure that would even remotely impact agriculture, though the permission for 51 per cent in FDI in multi-brand retail could be seen as the harbinger of good times for farmers.

An analysis of sectoral GDP numbers since the 1950s shows that it is only the services sector that has benefitted from reforms. While the share of industry has slipped marginally since 1991, that of agriculture has halved to 14 per cent in the last 21 years from 29 per cent in 1990-91. And, in the post-crisis period after 2008, the growth of agriculture has further slowed. The Reserve Bank of India deputy governor KC Chakrabarty noted last week, ?The policy focus (in agriculture), so far, has been on using higher MSP (minimum support prices) to generate supply response and public investment on expanding the irrigation potential.?

Despite Indians being among the highest savers, agriculture has seldom been an avenue for investments. Gross capital formation for agriculture is less than 7 per cent of GDP, while 52 per cent of the population depends on agriculture for their livelihood according to the 2001 census data.

Two major developments in the recent past have lifted the importance of this sector from the policy perspective ? rising food and commodity inflation reflecting the poor supplies of agricultural produce, the increase in the potential demand from rural India due to higher wages for agricultural labourers. Most surveys have shown that less than half the rural economy depends on agriculture for its livelihood. But the rest of the rural economy comprises a combination of services and manufacturing that depend on agriculture. Increased incomes within the farm sector are likely to have spilled over to these support sectors largely in the form of increased demand, and pushed up earnings in the non-farm rural sector.

According to Saugata Bhattacharya, chief economist, Axis BankBSE 0.20 %, consumption surveys have indicated that rural monthly per capita expenditures (MPCE) increased from Rs 928 in FY10 to Rs 1,281 in FY12 (a 33 per cent increase over 2 years in nominal terms, broadly in line with nominal GDP growth). One possible explanation is an increase in investments in rural India (including real estate and gold). Besides, some also point out to the rise in the prospects for agro-based industries which are now labeled as a sunrise industry. ?Scalability through value-addition remains huge in agriculture. It works through two levers ? investment in agro-based infrastructure and, second, through direct investment in food-processing industries,? said Shubhada Rao, chief economist, Yes Bank.

These can be looked at seriously since the relative bottlenecks compared to setting up an industrial unit in the non-farm sector could be minimum. Besides, given the huge supply-side constraints for various farm products not only in the domestic market but also in the international market, such investments could not only increase the contribution of the farm sector in generating employment and output, but also address the concerns over food inflation.

Of late, the Reserve Bank of India has also started voicing its concerns on the agriculture prospects giving the subject much more detailed analysis in its various communications. Last week, RBI also put in the public domain, a time-series data beginning 2004 on the average daily wage rates for rural India indicating that it now considers this sector more seriously.

?This dataset on rural wages has been an important component for RBI in determining its monetary policy stance, whose publication now helps in understanding some of the concerns regarding the persistence of demand, particularly in rural areas,? said Bhattacharya. The central bank, which often advises the government on managing its finances, is also now talking aloud on issues in agriculture. ?There is a need for improving the market structure for agricultural commodities, ensuring competitive pricing, enhancing warehouse facilities and improving rural roads for better connectivity with urban markets. Better water management, with an emphasis on water harvesting, would be important for enhancing farm productivity and output,? said Chakrabarty last week.

A Rewarding Career Path: Taking Charge Of A Non-Profit ...

by Jason Lynch

When people think about careers, managing a non-profit organization typically isn?t the first thing that comes to mind. It?s not a prestigious option; while it?s a major asset on a resume, working for a non-profit organization almost inevitably means taking a pay cut. For some people, this kind of work isn?t enough of an asset to inflate their future wages and make up for lost pay.

However, few careers are as fulfilling as non-profit work, and there are plenty of reasons to consider it over other options.

Non-profit Organizations Value Making a Difference Over Everything Else

Far too many jobs in the corporate world involve acting like a machine. The company exists only to increase the numbers on its various accounts. There may be goals beyond that, and of course everyone has their own reasons for working in the corporate world, but the strong emphasis on the bottom line can take the soul out of it.

Non-profits have to worry about maintaining funding, but it?s a fundamentally different process than pushing numbers higher for the sake of personal or corporate gain. Non-profits have to put helping people above everything else, and that makes for a much healthier and saner work environment.

Managers Make the Difference

Organizations don?t simply put themselves in order, and that?s especially true for non-profit entities. The way that they manage both funds and people is far more important that it is even within a typical business organization. Typical businesses can always come up with new ways to increase their profits, and while non-profit organizations have to do the same when it comes to increasing their funding, they?re likely to experience ups and downs that surpass the usual ebb and flow of the business world.

It?s an incredibly challenging occupation, and that makes it all the more rewarding when things go well.

Managers Can Help Get Youth Involved

One of the most important aspects of any organization is bringing fresh blood into the mix. Generation Y has a very different set of expectations than the baby boomers, and organizations that want to remain viable need to find new ways of doing things. Young workers want easy access to senior management, and they expect to play an integral role even if it?s only a small one.

Managers can not only help to facilitate clearer communication between the top and bottom ranks of their organizations, they can utilize each worker?s talents in a way that makes them feel like they?re doing something important.

Legacy

Every person wonders what he will be remembered for, and no one wants to leave the planet without changing it for the better. Working within non-profit organizations is one way to do that, and taking positions within them can also carve a path for certain individuals to take on bigger world-changing roles. Not only is management within the non-profit sphere incredibly fulfilling in itself, it?s a key element to any long-term and big-scale progress on an individual and a societal level.

The world needs more people who are willing to till those shoes, and many of the movers and shakers in the field today got their start as non-profit managers.

BoostCTR Selects Tipalti to Power Global ... - Business Review USA

AGOURA HILLS, Calif., Sept. 26, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Tipalti, the automated global mass payment solution for online advertising, game monetization and affiliate networks, crowd sourcing and crowdfunding networks, today announced BoostCTR has chosen the Tipalti platform to send fast, secure payments in local currency to its SEM writers around the world.

In just three short months of using Tipalti, BoostCTR has dramatically reduced its payment processing time, turning a chore that took more than half a business day each week into a 10 minute-a-week job. In addition to processing efficiency, BoostCTR can now offer new payment methods to its writers in more countries, and deliver timely payment in each writer's local currency via their preferred payment method. Plus, the Tipalti system has virtually eliminated payment failure/rejections while ensuring full Anti-Money Laundering (AML), anti-terror and anti-narcotics compliance.

"Using Tipalti has saved us a tremendous amount of time and money by streamlining a vital piece of our operations," said Rob Lenderman, BoostCTR co-founder. "Our writers love it because they get paid faster, in their preferred method and currency, and receive a higher net rate thanks to Tipalti's lower fees that eat less into their wages. Plus, Tipalti's broad international reach allows us to work with writers in more countries than we ever could with PayPal, tearing down a major barrier to our business expansion. With Tipalti, we can easily expand our services to offer our clients advertising optimization by native-speaking writers in emerging international markets."

About 20 percent of BoostCTR's weekly payments are made to international writers based in South America and Europe, as well as some in Australia. Prior to Tipalti, the company was able to pay only through PayPal, which limited its options when it came to hiring writers, and payments became more challenging as the company grew. Rather than investing a massive amount of time, labor and expertise into building an in-house solution, Tipalti's plug-and-play system was a smarter, more economical move.

Tipalti also helped BoostCTR become fully OFAC (Office of Foreign Asset Control) compliant with an automated built-in system that scans every payee against the government issued black-list, eliminating the risk of paying barred entities. In fact, Tipalti has proven so efficient, BoostCTR is looking into issuing daily payments, which Lenderman believes will greatly enhance writer satisfaction, boost productivity and improve recruitment.

Tipalti's efficient system enables any payer of any size to send payments to businesses or individuals in local currency to more than 200 countries in the world, all within minutes, via a single, simple file upload via a web dashboard or API. Tipalti handles all U.S. and international funds disbursements, U.S. tax form collection, U.S. end-of-year 1099 tax form generation, and other compliance workflows that typically consume significant time and resources. Tipalti's service can be free to use for payers, with transaction fees picked up by the funds recipient. The platform is fast and easy to implement, and typically takes less than a day to setup.

To get started, payers integrate a single line of code into their payee registration workflow using a white-labeled iframe. Payees enter their preferred currency and payment method?ACH/direct deposit, global-ACH/international local bank transfer, paper check, wire transfer, PayPal, prepaid debit card or cash via Western Union. The system incorporates local regulatory information to ensure payments are received by each vendor quickly and at the minimum cost.

When it's time to disburse payments, the payer uploads a single payment file to Tipalti and the system automatically reconciles payees and payment methods, screens payees against blacklist databases and disburses funds through the payer's bank account. Processing payments takes mere minutes, and there's no limit on how much or how little money can be sent.

To get started sending payments around the world today, visit www.tipalti.com.

Spending Time With the Kids by Getting Out of the House | Dadding

store1 300x300 What Kids, Parenting, and Best Buy all Have in CommonI grew up in a neighborhood where my parents could let all of us kids out of the house and into the neighborhood without many fears of bad things happening. My sisters and I all had friends up and down that street and we all got along and we all spent most of our days outside.

That doesn?t seem to be the case anymore. We can let Addie loose out into the circle and occasionally we let her walk two houses further to one of her friend?s houses, but for most of the time we have to be with Addie and Vivi when they want out of the house. Just as it is important that Casey get out of the house on occasion, it is probably even more important that our kids get out of the house as well. For both their sakes?and my sake.

Here?s what I have noticed during my stints as a temporary single parent over the past year. Taking the kids, especially Vivi, to the park or even just to the store makes parenting much easier. Sure, there?s the initial packing everything into a diaper bag and loading the kids into the car, which can be a nightmare for parents like me who don?t do the packing and loading thing all that often, but the rewards far outweigh that burden.

Deciding whether to pack up the kids or to sit at home trying to find activities is a pretty easy decision for me, because spending a full day one-on-one with just Vivi can be pretty difficult. The baby (alright, she?s a toddler but I don?t like admitting it) doesn?t like to play with her toys and she gets bored pretty easily, and there?s only so much Sesame Street that she can watch before I feel guilty for plopping her in front of the TV. There are all kinds of easy places that I can take this little one that aren?t even baby or kid oriented that will keep her fascinated and entertained. Using the afternoon to go to a local Best Buy without any real purpose other than to let Vivi play with all the cellphones has been a great way to keep Vivi entertained and to give me some relief from trying to constantly entertain her. Plus, I get to daydream about the TV I have been promising myself for the last three years that I will eventually buy and put in my family?s loft (or my bedroom).

I?ve also taken the kid to Walmart so we can take a walk down the Oreo Cookie aisle followed by a little stop in the toy aisles. It has always worked like a charm and Vivi comes away entertained and I usually end up with Oreo Cookies, that?s what we call a win/win. (Unless those Oreo Cookies are the new Candy Corn Oreos, those aren?t nearly as good as I expected them to be.)

The Best Buy strategy hasn?t always worked with Addie however, because she isn?t interested in playing with all the cellphones at Best Buy. She already knows the cellphones at the store aren?t toys and she doesn?t care about the latest and greatest in TV land. In fact, she hates going to what she calls the ?daddy store.? When that happens I just adjust and we take a trip to a pet shop, the Humane Society, or a Halloween store. Addie gets some time out of the house and away from the TV, and I get to decide which mask I?m going to secretly buy so I can scare the crap out of Addie when I wake her up for school on Halloween morning.

Rangers rally past A's 5-4 for 5-game AL West lead

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) ? Adrian Beltre singled home the winning run in the ninth inning and the Texas Rangers rallied past Oakland 5-4 on Monday night to stretch their AL West lead over the Athletics to five games with nine to play.

Beltre, whose 35th homer tied the score in the seventh, grounded a sharp single through the middle of the infield off Tyson Ross (2-11) in the ninth, bringing home pinch-runner Craig Gentry.

The Rangers got the inning started with consecutive singles by Mitch Moreland and Ian Kinsler before Elvis Andrus' sacrifice bunt. Josh Hamilton, who had already hit his major league-best 43rd homer after missing the previous five games with a cornea issue, was intentionally walked to load the bases.

Oakland has lost six of seven.

Prostate cancer diagnosis and surgery can lead to anxiety ...

Men who undergo surgical removal of prostate cancer can experience significant levels of anxiety one year after surgery, and higher levels of anxiety appear to be linked to poor sexual satisfaction and depression, say researchers at Mayo Clinic's campus in Florida. Their recent study, published in the online edition of Psycho-Oncology, suggests that men who experience high levels of "cancer-specific anxiety" following surgery for prostate cancer could likely benefit from counseling designed to address their worries and improve their quality of life.

"The 10-year survival for a man undergoing surgery to remove localized prostate cancer is greater than 95 percent. Given that the majority of men who undergo prostatectomy for prostate cancer will not die from their disease, we are concerned about what life will be like for these patients decades after diagnosis and treatment," says the study's senior investigator, Alexander Parker, Ph.D., an associate professor of epidemiology and urology.

While prostate cancer can be a life threatening disease, most men diagnosed with prostate cancer do not die from it. According to the American Cancer Society, more than 2.5 million men in the United States who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer are still alive.

"The odds of surviving for long periods of time following surgery for prostate cancer are very high," says surgeon and co-author Gregory Broderick, M.D., a professor of urology. "That means a lot of men are living as prostate cancer survivors and we at Mayo Clinic are committed to understanding factors that affect their quality of life, not just their quantity of life."

Dr. Broderick presented these results at the joint meeting of the Sexual Medicine Society of North America and the International Society for Sexual Medicine this summer in Chicago.

Data from studies in patients with other cancer types have shown that anxiety can significantly affect an individual's quality of life. "Our study is the first to specifically show that those men with higher cancer-specific anxiety one year after surgery for prostate cancer are more likely to report lower levels of satisfaction with their sex life and higher levels of depressive symptoms," Dr. Parker says. In their study, the Mayo Clinic researchers examined findings on 365 men who, one year after undergoing surgery for prostate cancer, completed a questionnaire designed to measure anxiety levels about the fact they have been diagnosed and treated for prostate cancer. The men also completed additional questionnaires to measure levels of erectile function, sexual satisfaction and depression.

The results showed that those men who reported high anxiety levels are more likely to report low sexual satisfaction and a high rate of depression symptoms. "What is interesting from the sexual health standpoint is we observed that anxiety was not linked to poor erectile function per se but was linked to low levels of sexual satisfaction," Dr. Parker says. "If our results can be confirmed by other investigators, it would suggest that anxiety is not affecting some men's ability to perform sexually but perhaps more their ability to enjoy their sex life."

While Dr. Parker and his colleagues observed that anxiety was generally higher in those men who had the more aggressive forms of prostate cancer based on their pathology reports after surgery, a number of men with nonaggressive cancer also reported very high levels of anxiety. "Among this specific subgroup of men with prostate cancer who have less aggressive disease we are talking about survival rates of nearly 100 percent, yet they think about cancer every day. This presents a great opportunity for identifying these men and offering intervention aimed at modifying this anxious behavior," Dr. Parker says.

Mayo Clinic already offers cancer patients access to behavior-based counseling led by trained psycho-oncologists. Dr. Parker says the results of this new study underscore the opportunity to test new ways of addressing this need in men with prostate cancer.

"Anxiety about a cancer diagnosis can lead to increased depressive symptoms and an inability to enjoy life's activities, including sexual relations," says Dr. Parker. "We are building on these results by designing trials to test whether counseling can help these patients."

Martin's HR in 10th lifts hot Yanks over A's

BY HOWIE RUMBERG

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:36 p.m. ET Sept. 21, 2012

NEW YORK (AP) - When Rafael Soriano gave up a tying homer in the ninth inning to spoil CC Sabathia's dominant start, the Yankees didn't get down. They knew what they needed to do to keep their AL East lead.

Russell Martin led off the bottom of the 10th inning with a homer off Sean Doolittle, and New York maintained its one-game division lead by beating the Oakland Athletics 2-1 Friday night for its sixth straight win.

"Good teams get each other's back," Martin said.

Sabathia pitched encouraging three-hit ball over eight innings to help the Yankees stay ahead of Baltimore, which beat Boston 4-2 for its fifth straight win. The A's, losers of four of five, dropped a game back of the Orioles for the top wild-card spot. Oakland started the day with a 4 1/4-game lead over the Angels.

Pinch-hitter Brandon Moss hit a towering home run to right field with one out in the ninth off Soriano to tie it 1-all and stun the boisterous crowd of 40,759 into silence. It was Soriano's fourth blown save in 46 chances.

"His arm may have been a little dead today," Joe Girardi said of Soriano, who saved both games of a doubleheader Wednesday against Toronto.

But Soriano disagreed. He said he had "normal soreness" and would go through his routine Saturday before letting his manager know if he will be available.

Curtis Granderson had a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning off Jarrod Parker and Ichiro Suzuki continued his torrid pace with two more hits - one getting caught in Parker's jersey.

The Yankees lost four-straight one-run games in Oakland in mid-July that began a summer swoon in which they blew a 10-game division lead. Martin's second walk-off homer this season gave the Yankees their 11th win in 15 games.

"You can feel that playoff weather coming," Martin said. "I like it. I enjoy it."

David Robertson (2-7) pitched a perfect 10th for the victory. Doolittle (1-1) pitched the ninth before giving up Martin's homer on an 0-1 pitch.

The catcher flinged his helmet almost all the way to first base as he approached home then was engulfed by his teammates as he stepped on home plate.

"Right off the bat I knew it was gone," Sabathia said. "He called a great game tonight and kept the guys off-balance and it worked out."

Parker was in line for a loss before Moss' homer despite matching Sabathia for eight innings. He gave up six hits and struck out seven in his first start at Yankee Stadium.

"It's really frustrating," Doolittle said. "He did such an unbelievable job going toe-to-toe with Sabathia."

Sabathia's performance had become one of the biggest question marks in the Yankees rotation the past several weeks. The big lefty was 0-3 in his last four starts and he gave up leads in each outing. After two stints on the disabled list, his velocity was down but he insisted he was OK. Girardi said Sabathia was struggling with the command of his sinker and changeup.

He quickly put that to rest by striking out the side in the first with three breaking pitches. His velocity went up as the innings went by, ending the sixth by blowing a 96 mph a fastball past Jonny Gomes.

"I was just trying not to overthrow. I felt pretty good coming out of the bullpen," Sabathia said. "I just wanted to make sure I kept my delivery together and make sure I commanded the ball. The velocity will come and go so it's up to me to make pitches."

After a walk to Gomes with one out in the first, Sabathia retired 14 in a row before Stephen Drew singled leading off the sixth.

Sabathia gave up another hit to Drew with one out in the eighth. With two outs, Collin Cowgill beat out an infield single and Sabathia grazed Gomes with a pitch to load the bases.

Pitching coach Larry Rothschild visited the mound as Robertson warmed up in the bullpen. But Sabathia remained and got J.J. Reddick to fly out to left field on the first pitch of the at-bat, ending the inning.

The A's lead the majors in striking out and they fanned 11 times while walking twice against Sabathia.

"You want him feeling good about himself, confident," Martin said. "I think he definitely needed this start for himself."

Any questions about Parker being nervous in his first start in the Bronx were dismissed right away with an eight pitch inning. He didn't give up a hit until he lost Suzuki's bouncer back to the mound with one out in the third inning in his jersey. Parker grimaced in frustration as he failed to pull the ball out of his green and gold top.

The hit was Suzuki's 10th in his last 13 at-bats. Suzuki also had a hit in the sixth but was thrown out trying to stretch it to a double.

The Yankees scored in the fourth when Nick Swisher led off with a more traditional hit, a lined single to right field. Alex Rodriguez followed with a sharp single to center field. Granderson then hit a sacrifice fly.

Derek Jeter extended his hitting streak to a season high-tying streak of 15 games with a sixth-inning single.

NOTES: New York Giants defensive end Justin Tuck helped the Bleacher Creatures do the "Roll Call" in the first inning. ... Oakland LHP Jordan Norberto (shoulder tendinitis), out since Aug. 18, is close to playing catch. ... INF Eric Sogard (high ankle sprain) is doing some baseball activity but manager Bob Melvin doesn't see him as an option on the remainder of the road trip. ... Oakland's LHP Travis Blackley (5-3) faces the Yankees' Ivan Nova (12-7) Saturday afternoon. ... Girardi and Rodriguez both visited The Starkey Hearing Foundation meeting at Yankee Stadium and helped hand out digital hearing aids.

Biggest Life Changes That May Warrant Additional Health Insurance

6 hours ago, in Health & Beauty

Jeremy + Brittany | FlooredWhen you are hurt or sick you need health insurance. The cost of paying it on your own can place you in great debt. Simply getting the basic coverage may not be enough depending on your circumstances. There are times in your life where it may be in your interest to increase your coverage to things like income protection insurance or get additional amounts to help pay for upcoming costs.

Marriage

When two people form one union it can be a lot cheaper for the cost of the premiums if the family plan is taken into account. However, if both of you are working you will need to decide which company has the better option or if the cost will be cheaper to continue the coverage on separate policies.

Pregnancy

The cost to have a child has skyrocketed. Most of the fees that people pay for are the standard doctor office visits, medication for prenatal vitamins, and testing to ensure that the new baby is healthy. This does not include the actual hospital delivery costs. These costs can include everything from the use of the room to regular standard care.

Children

If you and your spouse alone are covered you need to make plans for the little one that is due to arrive. Most children often get sick as their immune systems build up a tolerance. They will also need to get immunization shots from the doctor and any routine checkups. These expenses will not be covered by your carrier if you have not added them on your policy.

Business Owners

If you are the sole business owner you make the decisions as to what goes on in the business day to day. There may be managers and others that report to you, but you are held responsible for the big financial decisions concerning the company. As you are a vital part of the company, you need to make sure that you have coverage that reflects this. Many owners do not have any type of coverage and when they become sick end up having to sell their company to pay for their bills.

New Employees

Whenever you are starting out you will need to have protection. Although the majority of people do not get sick when they are young they are more prone to get involved in some type of accident. Companies offer benefits to new staff after passing a probation period. It may be a few months or instantly, but make sure that you sign up.

Seniors

As people age they are more susceptible to getting ill. This is when they really need to have some type of coverage. Although the current standard is that you are converted over to a government plan when you reach the qualifying age (if you have paid enough money through your working career), others have not and must seek an alternative form of protection. While you are still working, you need to make plans on having adequate coverage that will last you for the rest of your life.

People need health insurance in order to pay for a potential sickness or accident. However, there are times in their lives when the standard policy may not be enough. This is when additional protection and coverage should be increased to reflect this and to help lower out-of-pocket costs.

Japan-Bashers Ridicule Chinese Regime

By Ma Ning

fac91 p2723601a863469794 321x350 Japan Bashers Ridicule Chinese Regime

Some in the crowd at recent anti-Japan protests in China found subtle ways to criticize the Chinese regime. One person holds a banner saying ?Give me 3,000 chengguan (municipal management officials) soldiers, the Senkaku Islands can be recovered; Give me 500 corrupt officials, Japan will be exhausted.? (Weibo.com)

A number of Chinese gathered at an annual anti-Japanese protest recently took advantage of the venue to sound off about corruption and social disorder in China.

The rally commemorates the 81st anniversary of the ?Manchurian Incident,? which was a pretext staged by Japanese military on Sept. 18, 1931, for its invasion of northern China. Civilians rallied and protested in more than 100 cities across China.?

Hidden Ridicule

Some protesters acted like ?double agents,? bashing both Japan and the Chinese regime.?

At a rally in Beijing, a banner read, ?Give me 3,000 chengguan (municipal management officials) soldiers, the Senkaku Islands can be recovered; Give me 500 corrupt officials, Japan will be exhausted.? He was referring to the Chinese regime?s territorial claims to the Senkaku Islands, an uninhabited, rocky land mass in the East China Sea. Chengguan are street cops who have sometimes provoked riots with their often brutal treatment of beggars and vendors; and corrupt officials are known to regularly embezzle vast sums of money.?

In Hangzhou a protester spoke out against China?s re-education through forced labor system: ?Abolish labor education before rallying for the Senkaku Islands, otherwise we may be sentenced to labor camps after the rally.?

A netizen wrote an email to the Apple Daily saying that one of the banner?s in Jilin City read, ?We commemorate the Manchurian Incident every year. How about the June 4 Incident?? The June 4 incident refers to the regime?s massacre of protesting students at Tiananmen Square in 1989. The banner holder was quickly caught and searched by plainclothesmen who confiscated his personal belongings and posters, according to the netizen.?

A photo of an elderly man who erected a blackboard in front of his family-owned store was posted on weibo.com and widely spread on the Internet. He wrote on the board, ?No medical insurance, nor social insurance. Yet, the Senkaku Islands must not be forgotten. Even though there is no pension payment from the government, the Senkaku Islands must be recovered. People have no property rights, nor human rights, but we are fighting for the rights of the Senkaku Islands. We cannot afford housing or graves, but we cede no land to the Japanese.??

Military-style tactics seen in US Consulate siege

(AP) ? The heavily armed extremists who laid siege to the U.S. Consulate in Libya used military-style tactics that may have steered Americans toward a waiting ambush, U.S. officials said Friday as they pieced together details about how the compound was overrun.

U.S. intelligence indicates that 50 or more people, many of them masked, were responsible for the Sept. 11 assault on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi. Gun trucks provided added firepower. The attackers set up a perimeter, controlling access in and out of the compound. A first wave of attacks sent the Americans fleeing to a fallback building, where a second group of extremists beset them with precise mortar fire.

Intelligence reports were still coming in, but officials told The Associated Press that what may have initially seemed like a protest over an anti-Islam movie that had spun out of control now showed the hallmarks of a more sophisticated operation.

In a country coming off a civil war, a level of battlefield savvy does not prove the attack on the compound was planned well in advance. How much planning went into the operation and whether it could have been detected or prevented remain unanswered questions, officials said.

The attacks killed Ambassador Chris Stevens, diplomat Sean Smith and two former Navy SEALs, who U.S. officials said were in Libya on contract with the CIA. Stevens was visiting Benghazi from Tripoli to preside over the opening of a cultural center.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss intelligence reports. They stressed that even now authorities do not have a clear understanding of exactly what happened in Benghazi. FBI agents from New York and Washington were in Libya investigating the attack.

"What happened in Benghazi was a terrorist attack," Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Friday. "And we will not rest until we have tracked down and brought to justice the terrorists who murdered four Americans."

Officials have not singled out one responsible group, but have focused their attention on Ansar al-Shariah, a Libyan militant group led by a former detainee at the U.S. military-run prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Since the civil war that ousted Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi last year, the country has been awash with rebels, militias and terrorists. Weaponry is easy to come by, both from the former regime, from weapons depots looted during the war, and from foreign powers that armed the rebellion. The origin of the weapons used in the assault on the U.S. compound was unclear, officials said.

Whether the attack was premeditated carries both political and intelligence significance.

From an intelligence standpoint, the longer an operation was in the works ahead of the attack, the more the U.S. government will face scrutiny for not anticipating and preparing for it.

Politically, Republicans have accused President Barack Obama's administration of misreading the assault as an outgrowth of Middle East demonstrations over an American-made Internet video insulting the Islamic prophet Muhammad. They have also criticized the protection of the consulate, particularly since the attack fell on the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, a date when authorities are normally on alert for attacks.

White House spokesman Jay Carney has said there was no evidence the attack was premeditated. Obama has said extremists used the protests as an excuse to attack.

A spontaneous protest that turns violent is harder to predict and respond to.

"The intelligence agencies are still not confident enough to represent to us whether it was planned in advance or taking the opportunity of a spontaneous protest," Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., said Friday.

Investigators say some of the people involved have a "hodgepodge of affiliations with multiple militant groups," making it hard to hold one particular militia or movement responsible, said a senior U.S. intelligence official, speaking anonymously because he was not authorized to be quoted publicly describing the investigation.

Wanis al-Sharef, who was Libya's deputy interior minister until he was fired after the attacks, said a small group of lightly armed gunmen were the first to gather outside the compound. They were then joined by a crowd of civilians protesting the film. Finally, a larger group of heavily armed men arrived with gun vehicles and grenade launchers. That final group was responsible for the siege.

Ansar al-Shariah has repeatedly denied being any part of the attack, but eyewitnesses and security officials said the group's militiamen were among the gunmen who joined the demonstration outside the compound. The group claimed its fighters were only in the Benghazi area providing security at Jalaa Hospital. But that's more than three miles from the U.S. compound, which lies on the outskirts of the city in a rural area.

One witness said he was detained by Ansar al-Shariah members during the protest because he was taking pictures of one of their leaders.

Whoever they were, the attackers stormed the main building and set it on fire. Many people escaped and fled to an annex to the east. About an hour after the assault began, American and Libyan forces retook control of the compound and brought everyone to the annex. Rescue teams headed their way.

Intelligence indicates the gunmen broke off into teams to block certain roads away from the compound, officials said. Whether that changed the route or otherwise influenced how the Americans moved through the streets remains unclear, but one U.S. official said the tactic was being looked at as an indication of battlefield strategy and sophistication.

As the Americans waited to be rescued from the annex, that building came under mortar fire. Mortars are short-range bombs that launch in high arcs. Aiming them can be a matter of trial and error. But U.S. officials said mortars were landing directly on the roof of the annex.

That, officials said, indicated an experienced fighter, a well-planned assault or both.
