Midlife Fitness Cuts Chronic Disease Later

Being physically active has numerous benefits. Now a study has looked closely at the effects of fitness in the midlife years for preventing debilitating chronic diseases later.
The ongoing study gathered fitness stats for more than 18,000 adults, and followed their health status into old age. Assessing 40 years of that data, the analysis finds that those who had higher fitness levels in their 30s, 40s and 50s were substantially less likely to have a chronic condition between the ages of 70 and 85. The findings are in the Archives of Internal Medicine. [Benjamin Willis et al, Midlife Fitness and the Development of Chronic Conditions in Later Life]
Physical fitness seemed to stave off heart disease and heart failure, which might not be a big surprise. But it also reduced rates of diabetes, kidney disease and even Alzheimer's disease.
Current recommendations suggest adults make time for at least 20 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity a day, such as fast walking, jogging, biking or swimming. Busy middle-aged people might find it especially hard to make time for such exercise. But a small investment looks like it could pay big health dividends for decades to come.

WASHINGTON, Aug. 30, 2012For many diabetics, monitoring their condition involves much more than adhering to a routine of glucose sensing and insulin injections. It also entails carefully monitoring the ongoing toll this disease takes on their body.
An innovative new optical diagnostic tool created by Columbia University researchers and reported today in the Optical Society's (OSA) open-access journal Biomedical Optics Express may soon make it easier to diagnose and monitor one of the most serious complications of diabetes, peripheral arterial disease (PAD). PAD, which is marked by a narrowing of the arteries caused by plaque accumulation, frequently results in insufficient blood flow to the body's extremities and increases a person's risk for heart attack and stroke.
This new noninvasive imaging technique known as dynamic diffuse optical tomography imaging (DDOT) uses near-infrared light to map the concentration of hemoglobin in the body's tissue. This mapping can reveal how effectively blood is flowing to patients' hands and feet.
"Currently, there are no good methods to assess and monitor PAD in diabetic patients," explains Andreas Hielscher, Ph.D., professor of Biomedical and Electrical Engineering and Radiology, and director of the Biophotonics and Optical Radiology Laboratory at Columbia University.
"Patients with PAD experience foot pain, called 'claudication,' while walking," adds Gautam Shrikhande, M.D., assistant professor of surgery, and director of the Vascular Laboratory at Columbia's Medical Center. "This pain continues, even at rest, as the disease progresses. In more advanced stages, PAD patients develop sores or ulcers that won't heal. Then, cell death, a.k.a. 'gangrene,' occurs and amputation is often the only solution. It's extremely important to diagnose PAD early, because medication and lifestyle changes can alleviate the disease."
This is where DDOT can help. "We've successfully used DDOT to detect PAD in the lower extremities," says Michael Khalil, a Ph.D. candidate working with Hielscher at Columbia. "One key reason why DDOT shows so much promise as a diagnostic and monitoring tool is that, unlike other methods, it can provide maps of oxy, deoxy and total hemoglobin concentration throughout the foot and identify problematic regions that require intervention."
"Using instrumentation for fast image acquisition lets us observe blood volume over time in response to stimulus such as a pressure cuff occlusion or blockage," said Hielscher.
To map and monitor the presence of hemoglobin, the protein that carries oxygen in the blood, red and near-infrared light is shone at different angles around areas that are susceptible to arterial disease. These specific wavelengths of light are then absorbed or scattered, depending on the concentration of hemoglobin.
"In the case of tissue, light is absorbed by hemoglobin. Since hemoglobin is the main protein in blood, we can image blood concentrations within the foot without using a contrast agent," Hielscher points out. Contrast agents pose the risk of renal failure in some cases, so the ability to monitor PAD without using a contrast agent is a great advantage.
Since more than 25 million people or 8 percent of the population in the United States are diabetic, this diagnostic tool has the potential to make it significantly simpler to diagnose and monitor diabetics with PAD in the future.
Khalil, Hielscher, and colleagues hope to bring their diagnostic tool to market and into clinics within the next 3 years.

My Life Purpose is to Guide You In Reconnecting with Your ...
Dear Friends,
I write to you today to invite you to celebrate with me as Spirit has recently revealed to me more specifics of my life purpose.
You see friends, by the recent experiences I've been through, plus the realization of my whole life's journey (so far) with love, it's come to my awareness that my life purpose is to guide you in reconnecting with your Soulmates and Twin Flame.
You see, I always knew I was here to teach about love.
I always knew that my frustration and struggles with love were for a reason - a higher reason - and that's why I have always shared my journey with you... ?as many of you know, who have been following me for a long time, I've been doing this since 2004!! ?(Wow!)
When my last partner and I transformed our relationship from a Soulmate connection into a Twin Flame / Divine Union I was floored. ?I thought I had arrived. ?The amazingness of it happening brought on tears every time I thought about the incredibleness of it.
And now, when many people would be feeling devastated about yet another breakup (and yes, I have seen your blog comment and emails) - I am here celebrating.
Again, in awe of the amazingness that is my life purpose.
And yes, I have been going through mourning as well, but please note there is a difference between feeling sad at times and mourning the end of a relationship versus being devastated over a breakup (maybe this is something you'd like to look into.? ?Going into a devastation zone, although many people do react this way in our society, is not a healthy reaction when a relationship comes to an end, and it simply means that some thoughts you have been believing need to be healed and tweaked. ?And no worries... ?I used to be in that place too!)
So friends, like I said, I am here celebrating.
I am celebrating because with any "ending" there is always a new beginning.
There are always gifts that come into your world and gifts that come into your awareness.
And that is what has been happening to me.
One of those gifts that Spirit has given me with the ending of this relationship is the clearer awareness of my life purpose.
And I must say WOW.
Again, I always knew I was to help people find love - and to not go through the struggle I went through -- but this awareness about my gift to help reconnect Soulmates and Twin Flames takes it to a whole new level.
It makes me feel so honored.
And grateful.
And as every new awareness comes and with every new shift in awareness, the space for more freedom, expansion and celebration is welcomed in.
I wish you the same peace and joy I am feeling.

Paul delegates mounting floor fight over new rules
WASHINGTON (AP) ? Rep. Ron Paul's delegates are trying to mount a floor fight over new GOP rules designed to limit the ability of insurgent presidential candidates to amass delegates to future Republican conventions.
They are getting help from other delegates, though it is unclear whether they can rally enough support to challenge the rules on the floor of the convention Tuesday.
Mitt Romney, the party's presumptive nominee, has plenty of delegates to win any floor fight. Nevertheless, party officials agreed to ease the new rules on Monday in an effort to appease some disgruntled delegates. Still, the dispute could provide an unwanted distraction for party leaders who would rather focus on promoting Romney and defeating President Barack Obama.
"It's so heavily scripted. This is not the forum in which they want to air the proverbial dirty laundry," said Juliette Jordal, a Paul delegate from Minnesota.
The new GOP rules would bind delegates to the outcome of presidential primaries and caucuses. Presidential candidates would be able to choose which delegates represent them at the convention. However, in a concession to activists agreed to on Monday, the candidates would have to consult with state parties in selecting the delegates.
Currently, state parties choose national delegates, usually at state and congressional district conventions.
The original rule approved by the convention's rules committee last week left state parties out of selection process, angering many party activists, not just those who support Paul. The change was agreed to Monday in an attempt to garner more support for the new rules, said an RNC official. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, was not authorized to discuss the negotiations publicly.
The new rules would also make it more difficult for insurgent candidates to get their names placed in nomination at the convention. This year, candidates need a plurality of delegates from five states to get their name placed in nomination, a threshold Paul did not reach. The new rules would require support from eight states.
The convention's rules committee approved the new rules last week before the start of the convention in Tampa, Fla. The rules were scheduled for a vote by the full convention Monday but many activities were delayed because of Tropical Storm Isaac.
A handful of Paul delegates tried to provide a taste of what's to come after Monday's brief convention session. After the session, a handful of Paul's supporters gathered near the rear of the convention hall and waved signs bearing Paul's name.
They included delegates from Oregon, Nevada and other states where the Texas congressman had support. They said they were upset about the pending rule changes.
"It's going to shut us out of the process," said Oregon delegate Larry Ericksen, a Paul backer compelled by state rules to vote for Romney at the convention. "We deserve a voice in the process."
The Romney campaign treads lightly around Paul while making it clear this is Romney's convention. On Monday, Romney's pick for vice president, Rep. Paul Ryan, downplayed the rift between Paul's supporters and the GOP ticket.
"We see eye to eye on a lot of issues and believe in sound money, We believe in limited government," Ryan told Fox News. "We believe in academic freedom. We believe in the founding principles. We believe that this is a watershed moment for America, whether or not we're going to reclaim the American idea or we're going to become, you know, a cradle-to-the-grave welfare state, which is where I think the president is taking us."
"So I think, in the final analysis, Ron is clearly going to ... he and his supporters should be very comfortable with us," Ryan said. "Ron is a friend of mine. I've known him a long time in Congress."
Romney's convention planner, Russ Schriefer, sidestepped questions about whether efforts by Paul supporters would project a lack of unity.
"In terms of unity, we are a big party. We have people with different opposing viewpoints. I don't think this is a particularly divisive point of view," Schriefer told reporters Monday. "The one thing we know is we're all united in defeating Barack Obama and at the end of the day, I guarantee you on Thursday as we walk out of this convention we will be 100 percent united behind MR and defeating Barack Obama for the good of the country."
Supporters of the new rules say voters expect the delegate count to reflect the outcome of state primaries and caucuses.
They point to states like Maine and Minnesota. Romney narrowly won local caucuses in Maine and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum handily won the presidential caucuses in Minnesota. But Paul's dedicated supporters were able to win most of the delegates in each of those states by taking control of the state conventions.
Ten Paul delegates from Maine were subsequently replaced by a convention panel last week after the panel decided they were picked through a flawed state selection process.
Paul didn't win a single primary but he was able to amass 177 delegates, according to the tally by The Associated Press, largely by organizing supporters at state conventions.
Opponents of the new rule say it would limit the ability of state parties to reward local activists, and Monday's weather delay is giving them time to organize.
"A lot of people who get elected as delegates and alternates to the convention are people who have been paying their dues for years and years," said Stavros Mendros, a Paul delegate from Maine. "I think it's a big mistake for the RNC to make."

BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) ? President Juan Manuel Santos said Monday that his government has opened "exploratory talks" with Colombia's main rebel group in a bid to end a stubborn half-century-old conflict.
Santos' announcement in a brief televised address confirmed mounting rumors of talks, supposedly held in Cuba, between representatives of his government and the leftist Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, which is largely a peasant army.
Santos offered no details of the talks, such as when they began, where they have been held, who has participated or what has been discussed.
"In the coming days the results of the conversations with the FARC will become known," said Santos, whose government was able to secure congressional enactment in June of a "peace framework" law that would provide amnesty to rebel leaders.
The FARC, estimated to number about 9,000 fighters, suffered major defeats during a decade-long U.S.-backed military buildup from 2000-2010 but have recently stepped up hit-and-run attacks, including sabotage of oil and coal mining installations. On Sunday, a car bomb in a rural area of the southeastern state of Meta killed six people, including two children.
Santos said military operations would continue "on every single centimeter of national territory" during whatever peace process might emerge.
That statement was a clear allusion to the last peace dialogue held with the FARC, when the government ceded a Switzerland-sized swath of southern Colombia to the rebels from 1999-2002 and reconciliation efforts collapsed as the guerrillas continued to mount attacks elsewhere on security forces, kidnap politicians and traffic in cocaine.
"We will learn from the errors of the past in order not to repeat them," Santos said.
His announcement followed a report Monday by the Venezuelan TV network Telesur that Colombia had signed an agreement in Havana earlier in the day to begin peace talks in Oslo, Norway beginning in October.
Colombian officials would neither confirm nor deny that report.
Santos has faced withering criticism from his predecessor, conservative hardliner Alvaro Uribe, over his peace overtures to the FARC. The 61-year-old economist, scion of a prominent newspaper family, was Uribe's defense minister from 2006-2009 and overwhelmingly won election in 2010 in his coattails.
Uribe has in recent weeks been zealously objecting to the Santos-FARC contacts.
Speaking to supporters Monday after Santos' announcement he questioned "what it is that we are going to negotiate?" He repeated his warning that peace would lead to military officers in jail and rebels in Congress.
Santos also mentioned in his address that Colombia's No. 2 rebel band, the National Liberation Army known by its Spanish-language initials ELN had expressed a desire to participate in peace talks and said "they, too, could be part of this effort to end the conflict."
The ELN is believed to number no more than 3,000 fighters and has recently stepped up attacks and kidnappings. Like the FARC, it has also held a series of failed past peace talks with the government.
In addition to Colombian territory, both the FARC and ELN operate out of rearguard positions in neighboring countries, especially Venezuela.
That country's president, Hugo Chavez, has been accused in the past by Colombian officials of providing refuge to Colombian rebels and the U.S. says senior Venezuela military officials have provided the FARC with arms and helped it traffic in cocaine.
Santos, a social progressive, has sought to create the conditions for peace through an ambitious program for returning land stolen from far-right militias to Colombia's displaced people, who number in the hundreds of thousands. But he has faced stiff resistance in rural Colombia, where right-wing criminal bands remain well-entrenched despite a peace pact made during Uribe's first term under which they purportedly laid down their arms.
Santos has suffered badly in the polls in recent months, dropping from 64 percent approval in April to 48 percent in June.
Analysts welcomed Santos' announcement but stressed that a raft of formidable obstacles stand between him and peace with the FARC, beginning with the government's ability to guarantee the safety of demobilized rebels.
A serious attempt in the 1980s to attain peace with the FARC also failed, in large part due to the wholesale slaughter by right-wing death squads of an estimated 5,000 rebels who decided to lay down their arms and enter politics.
Ariel Avila of the Nuevo Arco Iris think tank said he feared Santos was making "a risky bet" because any eventual peace dialogue is apt to get "trapped in the electoral process" that culminates in 2014 presidential elections.
Santos has not announced whether he will seek re-election.

Webb Telescope's 'golden spider'
ScienceDaily (Aug. 23, 2012) ? What looks like a giant golden spider weaving a web of cables and cords, is actually ground support equipment, including the Optical Telescope Simulator (OSIM), for the James Webb Space Telescope. OSIM's job is to generate a beam of light just like the one that the real telescope optics will feed into the actual flight instruments. Because the real flight instruments will be used to test the real flight telescope, their alignment and performance first have to be verified by using the OSIM. Engineers are thoroughly checking out OSIM now in preparation for using it to test the flight science instruments later.
This photo was taken from inside a large thermal-vacuum chamber called the Space Environment Simulator (SES), at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. Engineers have blanketed the structure of the OSIM with special insulating material to help control its temperature while it goes into the deep freeze testing that mimics the chill of space that Webb will ultimately experience in its operational orbit over 1 million miles from Earth. The golden-colored thermal blankets are made of aluminized kapton, a polymer film that remains stable over a wide range of temperatures. The structure that looks like a silver and black cube underneath the "spider" is a set of cold panels that surround OSIM's optics.
During testing, OSIM's temperature will drop to 100 Kelvin (-280 F or -173 C) as liquid nitrogen flows through tubes welded to the chamber walls and through tubes along the silver panels surrounding OSIM's optics. These cold panels will keep the OSIM optics very cold, but the parts covered by the aluminized kapton blankets will stay warm.
"Some blankets have silver facing out and gold facing in, or inverted, or silver on both sides, etc.," says Erin Wilson, a Goddard engineer. "Depending on which side of the blanket your hardware is looking at, the blankets can help it get colder or stay warmer, in an environmental test."
Another reason for thermal blankets is to shield the cold OSIM optics from unwanted stray infrared light. When the OSIM is pointing its calibrated light beam at Webb's science instruments, engineers don't want any stray infrared light, such as "warm photons" from warm structures, leaking into the instruments' field of view. Too much of this stray light would raise the background too much for the instruments to "see" light from the OSIM -- it would be like trying to photograph a lightning bug flying in front of car headlights.
To get OSIM's optics cold, the inside of the chamber has to get cold, and to do that, all the air has to be pumped out to create a vacuum. Then liquid nitrogen has to be run though the plumbing along the inner walls of the chamber. Wilson notes that's why the blankets have to have vents in them: "That way, the air between all the layers can be evacuated as the chamber pressure drops, otherwise the blankets could pop," says Wilson.
The most powerful space telescope ever built, Webb is the successor to NASA's Hubble Space Telescope. Webb's four instruments will reveal how the universe evolved from the Big Bang to the formation of our solar system. Webb is a joint project of NASA, the European Space Agency and the Canadian Space Agency.
