Arrhythmia drug may increase cancer risk

Apr. 8, 2013 ? One of the most widely used medications to treat arrhythmias may increase the risk of developing cancer, especially in men and people exposed to high amounts of the drug. That is the conclusion of a new retrospective study published early online in CANCER, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Cancer Society. The study's results indicate that a potential link between amiodarone and cancer warrants further investigation.

Amiodarone was approved in 1985 for the treatment of arrhythmias, or irregular heartbeats. Because the drug is fat-soluble and degrades very slowly, large amounts can accumulate in soft tissues after a long-term prescription. Previous studies have shown that amiodarone might increase the risk of certain cancers, but no large-scale study has looked at the issue.

To investigate, Vincent Yi-Fong Su, MD, of the Taipei Veterans General Hospital in Taiwan, and his colleagues studied 6,418 individuals taking the drug, following them for an average of 2.57 years. A total of 280 participants developed cancer.

Patients who were male or who received high cumulative daily doses of amiodarone within the first year had an increased risk of developing cancer. Those with both factors were 46 percent more likely to develop cancer than those with neither factor. After taking age, sex, and illnesses into account, individuals taking a high amount of amiodarone had nearly twice the risk of developing cancer as those taking a low amount of the drug.

"We suggest that cancer events should be routinely reported in future amiodarone trials, and further observational research is necessary," said Dr. Su. "Also, when prescribing amiodarone, doctors need to keep in mind that this medication may increase cancer risk."

Report: Apple and Yahoo Are Working Together for Deeper Integration on the iPhone

Apple, which hates Google, is supposedly working with Yahoo, who will take anybody's love at this point, to figure out how "Yahoo's services can play a prominent role on Apple's iPhone and iPad", according to the WSJ. This actually shouldn't be too much of a surprise as data from Yahoo Finance and weather already pops up on the iPhone. More »

Italian police arrest 37 accused Mafia members, including Sicilian mayor

By Wlad Pantaleone, Reuters

PALERMO, Sicily -- Italian authorities arrested 37 people accused of involvement in the Sicilian Mafia, including the mayor of a town on the island, police said on Monday.

The arrests, on charges including organized crime and extortion, were ordered by the Palermo anti-Mafia office to tackle what police said was a network to control businesses in towns around Sicily's capital.

Among those arrested was the mayor of Montelepre, a town of 6,000 famous as the home of 1940s "Robin Hood" bandit leader Salvatore Giuliano, as well as a livestock breeder who police said was the head of the ring.

Anti-Mafia prosecutor Francesco Messineo told reporters the investigation had revealed a concerted attempt to influence local politics. "Here we have two municipal governments ... that have been the subject of strong Mafia contamination," he said.

Italy has long struggled against the ingrained influence of mafia organizations whose operations are estimated to constitute up to 10 percent of gross domestic product.

Italy's main crime groups -- the Sicilian Cosa Nostra, Calabria's 'Ndrangheta and the Camorra from the southern city of Naples -- have a total annual income of $151 billion, according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.

Last week Italy made its biggest confiscation of Mafia assets in history, seizing dozens of green-energy companies and other assets worth a total of $1.69 billion.

Fire official: 2 trapped North Carolina children likely dead

DENVER, N.C. (AP) ? Two young children trapped when dirt fell on them at a home construction site Sunday were not expected to be found alive and crews expected to work through the night to recover their bodies, a fire official said.

A father of one of the children called 911 at about 6 p.m. to report what happened, said Lincoln County Emergency Services public information officer Dion Burleson. Crews were on the scene in minutes, but couldn't get to the 7-year-old boy and 6-year-old girl, Burleson said.

Crews used shovels and climbing gear trying to get to the children at the Denver neighborhood. Emergency personnel from several places, including nearby Charlotte, were on the scene late Sunday.

Video from WSOC-TV shows backhoes scooping dirt from a deep hole surrounded by dirt. Equipment surrounded the hole. Burleson said it is hard to estimate how far down the children might be.

The man who called was the father of at least one of the children, Burleson said. Neighbors told WBTV that the children were cousins.

This is "devastating for both the family members and responders who are on the scene," Burleson said. "This is a tragic night in Denver."

Suspects booked on murder in Nev. official's death

RENO, Nev. (AP) ? Investigators believe four suspects stole property in the apartment of Nevada's chief insurance examiner before killing him and dumping his body in a river, authorities said Sunday.

Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong said all four suspects have been booked on murder charges in the death of William McCune, 62, whose blanket-wrapped, duct-tape-bound body was found Saturday.

Initially, Michael Evans, 23, and Anthony Elliot, 20, were booked on murder charges, while Raul Garcia, 22, and Makyla Blackmore, 20, were arrested on burglary charges. But Furlong said Sunday that Garcia and Blackmore were later booked on murder charges.

The suspects are from the Carson City area, he said, and the case isn't related to McCune's work for the state.

Investigators found evidence of a bloody, violent struggle in McCune's apartment on Thursday, the same day he was reported missing after he failed to catch a business flight with a co-worker.

Detectives believe McCune knew two of the suspects socially, Furlong said, and the possible motive was the theft of property or money from him driven by illegal drug use. They're still processing evidence at McCune's apartment and trying to compile an accurate list of stolen items, he said.

"We think stealing was quite apparently the motive because they took so much from him," Furlong told The Associated Press. "The mystery is if you intended on robbing and killing him, why did you have to take the body out? That doesn't make sense to me."

Three suspects were arrested Saturday on the Las Vegas Strip after allegedly trying to sell a "computer item," the sheriff said. Investigators were trying to determine whether it belonged to McCune.

Evans was taken into custody in Carson City, while authorities believe the other three suspects fled Carson City for Las Vegas after news broke of McCune's disappearance.

All four suspects were spotted near McCune's apartment around the time of his disappearance, and businesses frequented by the suspects provided important tips that led to their arrests, Furlong said. He declined to elaborate.

Authorities were unsure how long two of the suspects and McCune knew each other or how they met.

It wasn't clear Sunday whether any of the four had an attorney, and the Las Vegas and Carson City jails don't make new inmates available to the media for comment. The three suspects in Las Vegas are expected to be returned to Carson City within a week.

McCune had held his position since December 2009 and worked similar jobs for two decades before that. As head of the division's corporate and financial affairs section, McCune worked to ensure the solvency of insurance companies in the state. He was charged with ensuring each company had sufficient money in their reserves to cover all claims and obligations.

McCune was single and without any known children, Furlong said, and there was no forced entry at his home.

Investigators believe the body found in the Carson River Saturday was that of McCune, even though a positive identification and cause of death are not expected to be officially established by the Washoe County medical examiner's office until later this week, he said.

There was no indication yet of the weapon or weapons involved in the death, he added, but investigators would have a better idea after autopsy results are released.

While authorities have not found McCune's pickup truck, they located its license plates Friday night at a Carson City residence that Evans was known to have frequented, the sheriff said.

Investigators do not expect any additional arrests in the case. "We believe all the people involved have been taken into custody," Furlong said.

Dim labor report shows US added just 88K jobs

This Friday, March 29, 2013 photo shows a help wanted sign at a barber shop in Richmond, Va. U.S. employers added just 88,000 jobs in March, the fewest in nine months and a sharp retreat after a period of strong hiring. The slowdown is a reminder that the job market's path back to health will be uneven. (AP Photo/Steve Helber)

Chart shows the U.S. unemployment rate

(AP) ? A streak of robust job growth came to a halt in March, signaling that U.S. employers may have grown cautious in a fragile economy.

The gain of 88,000 jobs was the smallest in nine months. Even a decline in unemployment to a four-year low of 7.6 percent was nothing to cheer: It fell only because more people stopped looking for work and were no longer counted as unemployed.

Friday's weak jobs report from the Labor Department caught analysts by surprise and served as a reminder that the economic recovery is still slow, nearly four years after the Great Recession ended.

"This is not a good report through and through," Dan Greenhaus, chief economic strategist at brokerage firm BTIG, said in a note to clients.

Economists had no single explanation for why hiring weakened so sharply and broadly ? from retailers and manufacturers to electronics and building materials companies. Some said deep government spending cuts that began taking effect March 1 might have contributed to the slowdown, along with higher Social Security taxes. Others raised the possibility that last month was just a pause in an improving job market.

Whatever the reasons, slower job growth will extend the Federal Reserve's policy of keeping borrowing costs at record lows.

March's job gain was less than half the average of 196,000 jobs in the previous six months, raising the prospect that for the fourth straight spring, the economy and hiring could show strength early in the year, only to weaken later. Some economists say weak hiring may persist into summer before rebounding by fall.

The percentage of working-age Americans with a job or looking for one fell to 63.3 percent in March, the lowest such figure in nearly 34 years.

Stocks plummeted after the report but narrowed their losses later in the day. The Dow Jones industrial average closed down about 41 points. Broader indexes also declined.

The Labor Department uses a survey of mostly large businesses and government agencies to determine how many jobs are added or lost each month. That's the survey that produced the gain of 88,000 jobs for March.

The government uses a separate survey of households to calculate the unemployment rate. It counted 290,000 fewer people as unemployed ? not because they found a job but because they stopped looking for one.

The percentage of working-age adults with a job or looking for one is a figure that economists call the participation rate. It's the lowest since 1979. Normally during an economic recovery, an expanding economy lures job seekers back into the labor market. But this time, many have stayed on the sidelines, and more have joined them.

Longer-term trends have helped keep the participation rate down. The baby boomers have begun to retire. The share of men 20 and older in the labor force has dropped as manufacturing has shrunk.

After expanding from the early 1950s through the mid-1990s, the share of women working or looking for work has plateaued. Fewer teenagers are working. And some people who have left the job market are getting by on government aid, particularly Social Security's program for the disabled.

Heidi Shierholz, an economist at the liberal Economic Policy Institute, said the labor force participation among those ages 25 to 54 ? "prime age" workers ? has dropped to 81.1 percent. It hasn't been lower since 1984.

Gary Burtless, senior fellow in economic studies at the Brookings Institution, noted that some Americans have likely stopped looking for work because their unemployment benefits have run out. People must be looking for a job to qualify for unemployment benefits.

"If people aren't collecting benefits, they have one less reason to be out pounding the pavement looking for a job," Burtless said.

If the economy slows this spring, it would follow the pattern of recent years.

An intensifying European financial crisis depressed hiring in 2010. Japan's earthquake and tsunami also disrupted U.S. manufacturing in 2011. Last year, an unusually warm winter caused employers to do more hiring early in the year, cutting into hiring that normally happens in spring.

This year's steep government spending cuts could have the same effect. But some economists say they expect any weakening this spring to be milder. The economy has a stronger foundation now. Rising home prices and near-record-level stock prices are making consumers feel wealthier and spend more.

"The recovery is on much better footing this year than in the last few springs, and the recovery in the housing market will do much to support growth," said Sophia Koropeckyj, an economist at Moody's Analytics.

Economists also cautioned against reading too much into a one-month slowdown in hiring.

Friday's report also showed hiring was stronger in January and February than previously estimated. January job growth was revised up from 119,000 to 148,000. February was revised from 236,000 to 268,000.

Those revised totals suggest that some hiring might have again occurred earlier in the year than usual. Job gains have averaged 168,000 in the past three months, close to the trend of the past two years.

The Fed has said it plans to keep short-term interest rates at record lows at least until unemployment falls to 6.5 percent ? and Chairman Ben Bernanke has said a 6.5 percent rate is a threshold, not a "trigger," for any rate increase. The Fed wants to see sustained improvement in the job market.

Several industries cut back sharply on hiring. Retailers cut 24,000 jobs, manufacturers 3,000 jobs.

Some economists said retailers might have held back on hiring in part because March was colder than normal. That likely meant that Americans bought fewer spring clothes and less garden equipment.

Fred Whyte, president of Stihl Inc., which makes chainsaws, lawn trimmers and other equipment, said the Virginia Beach, Va.-based company has benefited from the housing recovery and is looking to fill about 130 jobs, including engineers, machinists and software programmers.

With home sales rising, more people are willing to spend money to spruce up their yards, Whyte said. Commercial developers are spending more on landscaping.

But Whyte said the company has heard complaints from retailers that cold weather in March was holding down sales.

The oil and gas industry has been adding jobs fast over the past several years but cut jobs in March for the first time in 2? years. Oil drilling and exploration is booming, but low natural gas prices over the last year have made natural gas drilling in some areas unprofitable.

In March, average hourly pay rose a penny, the smallest gain in five months. Average pay is just 1.8 percent higher than a year earlier, trailing the pace of inflation, which rose 2 percent in the past 12 months.

Most analysts think the economy strengthened from January through March, helped by the pickup in hiring, a sustained housing recovery and steady consumer spending. Consumers stepped up purchases in January and February, even after Social Security taxes rose this year.

At the same time, some small businesses say they've grown more cautious about hiring. The government spending cuts could cut into sales at companies with federal contracts and at small retailers located near government facilities. And small business owners worry about increased health insurance costs next year, when the government's health care overhaul is fully implemented.

As federal agencies and contractors cut back in coming months, Nariman Behravesh, chief economist at IHS Global Insight, expects job growth to average 100,000 to 150,000 a month, down from an average 212,000 from December through February. He expects hiring to pick up after mid-year.

"The good news," Behravesh said, "is that this is happening at a time when the private economy is gaining momentum."

Unannounced BlackBerry 10 R-Series phone pictured for the first time

DEAR ABBY: My husband, "Wade," and I went into a convenience store near our home that we frequent regularly. A new employee -- a pretty, much younger girl -- stared at Wade with an expression of recognition and surprise on her face. When I asked him what that was about, he laughed it off and said I was "imagining things."The next time we saw her, Wade acted nervous and started talking fast, as if trying to distract me. He seemed to be avoiding eye contact with her. She ignored me while obviously trying to lock eyes with Wade. ...

Pillar To Post Welcomes Four New Franchisees in March

North America?s Largest Home Inspection Company Adds New?Class of Home Inspectors This Month

April 04, 2013 // Franchising.com // Tampa, Fla. - Pillar To Post, North America?s largest home inspection franchise, added four new franchisees this month. With 10 new territories added in the first quarter of the year and another 10 anticipated in the coming weeks, the company is on track to meet its goal of 75 new locations by the end of 2013.

?We?re pleased to continue our expansion with the addition of four outstanding franchisees in March,? said Dan Steward, president and CEO of Pillar To Post. ?We know they will be outstanding additions to the Pillar To Post team and will help us grow the brand aggressively in their markets.?

The new franchisees, who graduated from training on Friday, March 22, include Chad and Mary Bridwell of Athens, Ga., Marshall Mayer, who will service the Denver area, Jeff Pegg from Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Joseph Colyer of Orlando, Fla.

With strong growth already in the first quarter of this year, Pillar To Post is continuing last year?s record success. In 2012, the company posted new franchise recruiting numbers 250 percent higher than 2011. The company also saw 20 percent sales growth last year through a combination of more inspections, a broader service offer, and new franchisees.

Growth is helped by the continued resurgence of the real estate industry. According to a report from the National Association of Realtors, existing-home sales in February 2013 increased 10.2 percent over the same period in 2012, and sales were at their highest overall level since November 2009. This means the market is picking back up, signaling strong potential for the growth of home inspection franchises.

About Pillar To Post

Founded in 1994, Pillar To Post is now the largest home inspection company in North America with over 400 franchisees, located in 47 states and 8 Canadian provinces. The company expects to open a total of 75 new locations by the end of 2013; long-term plans include adding 500-600 new franchisees over the next five years. Pillar To Post was ranked the No. 1 home inspection franchise in Entrepreneur magazine?s 2013 Franchise 500?, the world?s first, best and most comprehensive franchise ranking, and earned the distinction of being ranked in Franchise Business Review?s Top 50 in the Large Franchise category for 2013, an award based on overall franchisee satisfaction. Patients sit in a sauna room at the Scientology Health Center of the Vietnam Association of Agent Orange Victims in Thai Binh, Vietnam. The center runs a 25-day health program which, as well as massive consumption of vitamins, includes four-hour sauna sessions and a morning run.

By Chris Brummitt, The Associated Press

THAI BINH, Vietnam?? North Vietnamese army veteran Nguyen Anh Quoc grimaces as he forces down the last of the 35 vitamins he takes each morning. After decades of suffering from illnesses he believes were caused by exposure to Agent Orange, he is putting his faith in a regime advocated by the Church of Scientology.

"I have to take them," the 62-year-old said at a treatment center established with the help of a Scientology-funded group. "They will clean up my body."

Na Son Nguyen / AP

Patients at the center take a dose of 35 vitamins early each morning.

The center, a converted mushroom farm in northern Vietnam, owes as much to Scientology's desire to expand around the world, away from scandal in the United States, as it does to pressure in Vietnam to try to help aging veterans still suffering from the effects of war.

Many medical experts regard the treatment ? a 25-day vitamin and sauna regime ? as junk medicine or even dangerous. But for now at least, it has found fertile ground here. Read the full story.

Patients get their pulse and blood pressure checked by doctors at the center. While there is no medical evidence that the treatment is effective, Vietnamese authorities are supporting it as a way of relieving some of the suffering of the between 2 and 4 million people suffering from illnesses linked to exposure to Agent Orange during the war.

Obama Sequesters Himself to Prove the Wrong Point

In a measure of solidarity with those affected by the budget-slashing government sequestration, President Obama is giving up 5 percent of his salary for rest of the year, which is almost as admirable and sensible as a mansion-owner shutting off his marble fountains during a drought.

RELATED: Who Owns the Sequester?

This is not to imply that the president shouldn't demonstrate some unity with those who've been furloughed or lost work because of the blind slashing the sequestration prompted. People like Jeff Maryak, profiled by BuzzFeed, who is considering re-enlisting to make ends meet after a 27 percent pay cut. People like those who've lost access to critical public services as government employees have been told to stay at home. Obama should certainly show that he understands how the cuts ??which he signed into law ??are hurting people across the country.

RELATED: Obama's Secret Food Offensive Marches Forward with Paul Ryan Budget Date

But a 5 percent pay cut is stupid. The New York Times reports that the amount was meant to "approximate the level of automatic spending cuts to non-defense federal agencies that took effect" at the beginning of March. (Obama's pay cut is retroactive to that date and runs through the end of the year, so he's forgoing 4.2 percent of his 2013.) For Obama, who makes a federally mandated $400,000 a year, he's losing $16,667 this year. For a worker earning minimum wage, Obama's pay cut is $1,500 more than they'll earn this year.

RELATED: What Time Does the Sequester Start?

Unlike the cuts faced by others, Obama's dip will not affect his lifestyle. The president has a few other perks that an average worker doesn't. He has a house, for example. He doesn't pay for gas in his limousine fleet. He pays for personal expenses, but also has an expense account, as detailed in this great (if old) Slate explainer. Very, very few people earning minimum wage can match that.

RELATED: Not All Crises Are Manufactured Equally

Nor would this be a big dent if the president weren't actually president. Barack Obama, thanks mostly to sales of his various books, has a pretty decent bank account. Last year, CNNMoney estimated his net worth at between $2.8 and $11 million. In 2011, the last year for which data is available, he earned about $790,000, including his presidential salary. Even if CNNMoney's lower bound estimate is correct, losing 16 grand is a dip of about .6 percent in his net worth.

RELATED: Obama Wants to Kick the Can a Bit More on the Sequester

All of which makes his offer to sacrifice five percent of his salary a worse move than if he'd done nothing. If someone you know to be wealthy drops a quarter into a cup held by a homeless person, you're far more likely to consider the move cheap than generous.

Granted, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel forced Obama's hand a bit, by offering to take a similar cut yesterday afternoon. (Hagel's losing about ten grand.) But the real problem is that cutting the salaries of individual elected officials is almost always a silly gesture. There are 100 senators in Washington. If each cut his or her (but mostly his) salary by 10 percent for the entirety of 2013, do you know how much that would save the budget? $1.7 million ??or .00005 percent of the federal government's 2012 budget of about $3.5 trillion. Add in the House, and you get up to .0002 percent. People love the idea ? there's a tantalizing punitive aspect to forcing pay cuts on legislators ? but it's all show.

What Obama's move does do is draw precisely the wrong sort of attention to cuts. The sequestration is having an affect across the country, but it's mostly hidden, falling on the backs of recipients of housing vouchers and food pantries and the long-term unemployed. Obama's move is forcing the press to talk about the issue again, but what the press is discussing isn't poor workers who are trying to make ends meet. Instead, they're discussing a wealthy man with exceptional benefits who is dropping quarters into tip cups.

Zynga Shares Rise 5% In After-Hours On Real-Money Games Launch Tomorrow

zyngapluscasino-zyngapluspoker_homepage-pngZynga’s shares are up by 5 percent in after-hours trading on news that the company is launching its first real-money games in the U.K. tomorrow. The company is bringing ZyngaPlusPoker and ZyngaPlusCasino to U.K. players tomorrow through a partnership with bwin.party, one of the world’s biggest real-money gaming operators. At first, the games will be downloadable or on the web, but Zynga plans to bring them to Facebook and mobile platforms later in the year. They could come to U.S. players later, but only as state or federal laws will allow. A handful of states, including Nevada and New Jersey, have passed legislation to allow online gambling. Under financial pressures from a long period of slow economic growth, about a dozen or more states are also considering pushing legal online gambling forward. But many of these laws favor existing land-based casinos ahead of companies that are purely online. Zynga might be pressured to partner with a casino there to make it work, even though they filed an Application for a Preliminary Finding of Suitability from the Nevada Gaming Control Board last December. As for the launch tomororw, Zynga’s U.K. arm and bwin.party plan to launch games that could include as many as 180 other casino titles like roulette and blackjack over the year. The poker title is basically an online poker room, while the casino title has about 160 familiar betting games. Zynga already has a very successful Poker title on iOS and Facebook that uses virtual currency. Zynga Poker was the company’s very first social game, the highest grossing app of 2012 on the iOS app store chart, and Zynga’s second-highest grossing title last year behind FarmVille. The Zynga Poker title generated 19 percent of Zynga’s online game revenue last year, or $217.4 million alone, according to its annual report. So if the company were able to add real-money gaming, which would increase average revenues per user substantially, it could change the character of Zynga’s business fundamentally. The thing is that real-money gaming is incredibly competitive in the U.K. Even though revenues rise per user, so do marketing costs as real-money gaming companies are pressured to spend an order of magnitude more to lure the most lucrative players. Total revenues may rise, but it doesn’t mean profits increase proportionally.

For prosecutors across the country, threat of violence 'comes with the job'

Kaufman County District Attorney's Office via AFP

Kaufman County District Attorney Mike McLelland.

By Tracy Connor, Staff Writer, NBC News

The murder of two Texas prosecutors is a reminder that officers of courts across the nation continually face threats that can be terrifying but are rarely carried out.

"It comes with the job," said Scott Burns, executive director of the National District Attorneys Association. "We all know that our jobs entail exposing ourselves to threats and risks."

Burns, who was a prosecutor in Utah, said it would be hard to find a member of his group who has not at some point been threatened or menaced.

Yet before?Kaufman County Assistant District Attorney Mark Hasse and DA Mike McLelland were gunned down two months apart, the NDAA had counted just 11 revenge slayings of local prosecutors since 1912.

The U.S. Marshals Service keeps tracks of threats against federal prosecutors and judges, and the number has hovered between 1,258 and 1,394 annually for the past five years after doubling between 2003 and 2008.

The National Association of Assistant United States Attorneys said when a threat is lodged, the Marshals Service decides on the response, which can range from a new alarm system for the prosecutor's home to a family escort to 24-hour guard outside the house.

The group's lobbyist, Bruce Moyer, has pushed for more secure parking facilities for federal prosecutors.

"These folks work incredible hours. During a trial it's not unusual for them to be at the office from 10:30 to 11 o'clock at night. Parking is not always in a secure location and they might have to walk several blocks in an urban area unescorted," Moyer said.

He said other federal prosecutors have pushed to be deputized, which would allow them to carry a loaded firearm, but many requests are rejected.

The Marshals Service would not discuss specific security measures but said in a statement that it takes "appropriate steps to provide additional protection when it is warranted."

Personal accounts of unnamed prosecutors who had been threatened were attached to testimony the association submitted to Congress in 2007. They included:

? A prosecutor working a case against a group called Soldiers of the Aryan Culture said the marshals "intercepted a letter which spelled out a directive to killed the 'tall, bald prosecutor who runs a lot, goes to the airport a lot, and drives a silver Honda.'" He already had a home security system after threats during a motorcycle-gang prosecution. Now a closed-circuit TV was placed on a light-pole outside his home and he was deputized.

? A prosecutor whose children were threatened by an inmate said that after the marshals decided he was no longer in danger, he still feared for their lives. "They are now never left alone in our home," he said. His children's bus routes were changed, and he began carrying a gun.

? A drug prosecutor said an inmate tried to hire a hitman and provided him "detailed information about my home, automobiles and family." He was deputized and trained to check his car for a possible bomb, "which I did each day for more than a year."

Kaufman County Sheriff's Department via Reuters

Kaufman County Assistant District Attorney Mark Hasse.

? A prosecutor who said a defendant in a gun case shot at him and another defendant had set his horses and dogs loose on a public roadway. "It is often unavoidably dangerous to be an AUSA and the more time spends in the position, the more danger the position entails," he said.

When he was a county prosecutor, Burns said, there was a defendant who would follow and film him. He would get anonymous phone threats saying, "'You're a dead man.'"

"The worst was when I would show up at a restaurant and find out the cook was someone I had put in prison and I'd already eaten the meal," he said.

But Burns said he didn't dwell on the possibility that someone might strike out because there was little he could do to prevent it beyond responding to a specific threat.

"It's impossible to have any security detail or system in place that would protect prosecutors 24/7," he said. "And the truth is what's happened in Texas is very rare."

He noted that there are 40,000 city, state, county and district prosecutors in the country who handle 10 million felony-level cases a year. Many are threatened; very few are ever attacked.

"Divorce attorneys are more likely to get shot in the head than we are," he said.

The death of Hasse and McLelland will give his membership pause, and they may take the next poison-pen letter or anonymous call more seriously, he said. But in general, he said, they will view threats as an unpleasant part of a job they love.

"You live with it," he said.

April Fool?s Day is always a hot day for news releases, and this year is no exception. You can check out some of today?s amazing announcements right here! (Although they?re all lies)

Neptune Hyperdimension Game Machine

The Hyperdimension Neptunia series has gathered a lot of hype lately, but Compile Heart has delivered yet another bombshell with a brand new game console, the ?Neptune Hyperdimension Game Machine?. Modeled after the spunky heroine of the series, the Neptune is the most powerful gaming system to ever exist.

Neptune

The system uses a unique operating system with its own AI that adapts itself to your preferences. It has a total of 128 terabytes of memory and 32 terabytes of storage. In case that doesn?t sell you on the system, it also includes four PRD (Purple-Ray Disc) drives.

With a game console of these specs coming this July, you can just forget about the PS4.

Seiyuu Kaori Fukuhara Marries Emiri Kato

Kaori Fukuhara, the seiyuu who played Tsukasa in Lucky Star, announced on Twitter today that she has married Emiri Kato, who played Kagami in Lucky Star and Kyuubey in Madoka Magica. As you can tell from their photo together, they make a beautiful couple.

Be sure to support these two brides in their future jobs.

Shizuoka Prefecture is Now Silent Hill Prefecture

Japan?s Shizuoka prefecture has officially announced that they have changed their name to Silent Hill prefecture. As you can see from this screenshot, the tagline of the prefecture?s homepage is no longer ?the land of Fuji?, but ?the sealed town?.

Shizuoka

Furthermore, Shizuoka?s tea plantations are now brewing official ?Silent Hill tea?, their image character has changed from Mt. Fuji to Red Pyramid (Pyramid Head), and the lead nurse at every hospital is a Bubble Head Nurse ? at least, that?s what they?re called.

And why not? After all, the movie Silent Hill: Revelation 3D is opening in Japanese theatres on July 12, and with all of that hype, now is the perfect time for Shizuoka prefecture to change their name. Oh, and the name ?Shizuoka? (??) literally means ?silent hill?.

Makai Wars Scheduled for Summer Release

Nippon Ichi Software fans, do you remember Makai Wars, the game that was teased in 2004 and never released? Well, now is the time to rejoice, because it will finally be released this summer.

MakaeiWars

In this banner displayed on their official website, you can see that the official title is partially censored, and there is a suspicious silhouette. Who is this mysterious character? And why does that figure look so familiar? We?ll have to wait until Friday, when NIS announces more details.

(What?s that, you say? This might not be an April Fool?s joke and the game may actually be real? Don?t be silly.)

Spring Anime Lineup

Finally, get out your anime calendars, everyone. It?s time to make a bunch of revisions to this spring?s lineup.

SpringFools

As it turns out, A-1 Pictures is returning to the Idolm@ster franchise to animate The Idolm@ster Cinderella Girls. This will be exciting to see, considering there are over 100 characters in the social game.

But that?s not the only hit coming this spring. Anime fans can also look forward to ufotable?s adaptation of Type-Moon?s adult game Tsukihime, as well as Nareru! SE, the anime about a loli systems engineer. Of course, we can?t forget the long-awaited anime adaptation of Square Enix?s 1997 game Final Fantasy Tactics. With heavy hitters like these, who needs the next season of Railgun or OreImo?

Apple Brazil cuts prices on iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S

It might not have the trademark, but that hasn't stopped Apple shaving the cost of its entry-level iPhone 4 and 4S' to something closer to its price tag in North America. The 16GB iPhone 4S is now R$1,699 ($840), down from R$1,999, while the 8GB flavor of the iPhone 4 now rings in at R$1,099 ($544), reduced from R$1,499. According to O Globo, if you're willing to pay upfront in full (and by phone) you can even snatch an extra 10 percent off both. Otherwise, Brazilians will need to visit the online store to lay claim to the heavily-discounted handsets.

The case for Apple slowing down, rather than speeding up

The case for Apple slowing down, rather than speeding up

Instead of media and markets continuously hounding Apple about "what's next?!", there's a case to be made that Apple has already announced several services that could do with a little -- or a lot -- of their attention. It might not be as magical or revolutionary as a fresh name on a big slide, but making what's already here work better could also increase the value of Apple's platform as a whole. At least that's what Joe Cieplinski thinks:

If the pattern used to be ?release, then iterate, iterate, iterate,? it seems like Apple is not giving itself enough time for the ?iterate? part of that process. It?s being pressured to move on to the next thing. And that leaves us with a lot of half-baked products and a ton of unrealized potential.

Cieplinski calls out FaceTime, Passbook, iBooks Author, and, of course, iCloud. And you know what? He makes a compelling case. Read it over.
